Al Khumra 2 and 3 Wastewater Treatment Plant Refurbishment

commissioning in 2012.
Stage 1 units have come to the end of their life although on commencement of this project
were still in operation. Serious deterioration of structures and M&E plant mean that the
treatment quality is very poor.
This project was to refurbish and upgrade items in Stages 2 with capacity of 60, 000 m3/day and
3 with capacity of 140.000m3/day of the treatment plant. From earlier reports the focus was
to be on the inlet facilities of automated screens and grit removal facilities which on both
Stages were inoperable.
Stage 2 being older and in worse condition required more extensive inspection and
replacement of items to be specified including aeration units, lift pumps, screw pumps and
electrical items and switchgear.
A four-month period was specified by NWC necessitating a rapid delivery of specifications,
which were on a performance basis detailing and listing the items to be replaced by
refurbishment contractors.

A preliminary review and assessment of the existing sewerage systems and sewage treatment
assets to identify any deficiencies and shortcomings that needed improvement;
• Dividing the DCG into suitable catchments for their better operation and management,
and the identification of suitable sites for the construction of STPs for each of them,
including any interconnecting trunk sewers and ancillary structures;
• The verification of existing population for each catchment and their projection up to year
2035 using suitable and appropriate growth rates;
• Finalization of the raw sewage parameters and design criteria to be used in the design of
the STPs;
• Sewage effluent standards to be adopted which would be in line with current Syrian laws
