A. Publications
1. Interocular Symmetry in Choroidal Thickness Christiane Al-Haddad, MD; Lama El Chaar, MSc; Rafic Antonios, MD; Mays El-Dairi, MD; Baha’ Noureddin, MD Journal of Ophthalmology, Accepted October 2014 A Prospective, observational, cross-sectional study to report interocular differences in choroidal thickess in children using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and correlate findings with biometric data.

B. Complete Projects
1. Choroidal Changes in Amblyopia: A prospective institutional study to detect changes in the choroidal layer at the macular area in amblyopic eyes using enhanced depth spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
2. Patterns of Uveitis in Children According to Visual Maturity: Comparison of Visual Outcomes and Complications: This original article is a retrospective chart review reporting patterns of pediatric uveitis in the Lebanese population and identifying the most common causes of visual loss from this disease according to visual maturity. We focused on the impact of amblyopia on the visual outcome of younger patients. This topic has not been addressed previously.
3. Intra-operative Complications During Cataract Surgery in Patients with prior Intravitreal Injections: A retrospective chart review that aims at comparing patients undergoing cataract surgery who have received intravitreal injections to patients undergoing cataract surgery but who are naive to injections. We believe that a better understanding of how these repetitive intravitreal injections can affect the integrity of the lens capsule should help alert surgeons of possible risks and, at the same time, propose new solutions to avoid surgical complications.

C. Ongoing Projects
1. Genetic Study of Strabismus Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders (CCDD’s) and their associated anomalies: This collaboration between Dr. Al-Haddad at the American University of Beirut, Medical Center and Dr. Elizabeth Engle at Boston Children’s Hospital is designed to study the underlying genetic causes of axon guidance disorders, that include the congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDD’s), strabismus and disorders of central white matter tract development. Strabismus patients will be identified by Dr. Al-Haddad in the pediatric ophthalmology clinic during their routine visits and a research appointment will be set up if patients express interest. During the appointment, consent forms will be signed and saliva samples will be collected by the research assistant. For confidentiality, samples will be de-identified and coded prior to shipping to the Engle lab. Samples will be accompanied by de-identified medical records and family pedigrees, all prepared by the research assistant.

2. Keratoconus Prevalence study in Children A prospective study to detect the age of onset and the spectrum of corneal topographic changes of subclinical keratoconus in the pediatric population in keratoconus susceptible individuals before the damage of the disease ensues, and to evaluate its rate of progression over time.
