36 hours contact time per week
Lecturer teaching the following subjects:
• Working safely in an engineering environment
• Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
• Using and communicating technical information.
• Producing mechanical engineering drawings using a CAD system
• Preparing and proving CNC machine tool programs
• Producing components using hand fitting techniques
• Producing mechanical assemblies
• Preparing and using CNC milling machines
Over the course of the year I fill out evidence books ready for the EV to come in. I also fill and create X200 review forms as this is the assessing side of the job.
Most of my teaching is in the workshop showing the students how to use lathes, milling machines as well as helping them gain the hand skills ready for industry. Over the course I have many training tasks that must be completed before I set the assessment. At the end of the year I help the apprentices make a steam engine as well as the day release students. Part of my timetable also states that I teach City and Guilds- Health and Safety, this is taught 3 hours per week and each week a scheme of work is followed, when I know the students are ready I get them booked in to the exam my results were 100% pass not one of my students failed the exam.
Oil and Gas
At Renown oil and gas I was programming a Haas milling machine producing components for the oil and gas industry. Renown is a subcontract shop and most of their work is for GE (Wellstream).
The components that are manufactured get sent around the world for various oil and gas applications.
During the time at Renown I gained a lot of knowledge such as working with exotic steel and knowledge of overlay cladding.
At Renown I worked on a Colchester conventional lathe making small components and shop equipment.
Part of Renown's contract they had was for a company called Weir Valves I machined the valves from forgings and castings adding detail that was included in the engineering drawings.
MOD work was also undertaken making rollers for various military vehicles this was subcontracted through Pearsons.
Bastion Glassfibre is a subcontract shop making non-metallic components. During this time I gained a lot of experience working with specialist engineering polymers.
The components that were manufactured at Bastion were for the medical and electrical industry. During my time at Bastion I became very familiar using Alphacam a CAD/CAM software package that uses post processors to send programs to CNC milling machines where they are manufactured using the best times and hitting targets and deadlines when requested.
