Thesis Title: "Study of Hydraulic Characteristics of Continuous Flow Tanks Used in Water Treatment Plants"

Thesis Abstract:

Hydraulic detention time is a main parameter for design and optimization of any water treatment tank or reactor. The presence of dead zones decrease the effective volume of the tanks that may almost result in a short circuit between the inlet and outlet of the tank. For settling tanks; short circuit induces high turbulence intensity in other regions, which not only decreases the possibility of particle aggregation and deposition, but may also causes solids re-stabilization. Also, in mixing tanks; the short circuit has an effect on the detention time and velocity gradient required for proper mixing process.

The aim of this thesis is to study the hydraulic characteristics of the continuous flow tanks used in water treatment plants. A 3D computational model has been mapped to FLUENT® solver for settling tanks with Aspect Ratios (AR)= 1, 2, 3, and 5. At each AR value; different inlet baffles is studied. For mixing tanks; the 2D plane projection is used to investigate the effect of baffles and rotation direction in mixing tank with AR= 1, 2, and 3 using Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) model with various configurations. An experimental apparatus is used to validate the theoretical results of settling tanks models by measuring turbidity at various points in the tank and comparing the trend with velocities inside the tank. For mixing tanks; the results has been compared with the results of previous works. The performance was measured in terms of turbidity removal for experimental settling tank models with AR= 1 and 3. The existence of inlet baffles in settling tanks improves the performance of the settling process where the efficiency of the settling tank with AR=1 increased up to 38.79% and up to 46.65% in settling tanks with AR= 3. Mixing tanks with different aspect ratios are studied. The performance of mixing tanks are affected by aspect ratio, shape and location of internal baffles and also the direction of rotation related to the direction of flow.
