Sr. Process Engineer at SADARA Chemical Company
  • Saudi Arabia
  • My current job since February 2014

Contract/Grade: Regular/Gr. 13
Sadara Chemical Company is an alliance between two corporate leaders in their
respective industries Saudi Aramco and Chemical Company. Sadara is
world's largest chemical complex ever built in a single phase, with 26 integrated world scale
manufacturing plants that produces more than three million tons of products every year.
In Sadara my role is to provide process engineering support to Overall units of SADARA with
special assignment/support on novel technologies in KSA which includes Nitric Acid,
Mono-Nitrobenzene, Aniline, Formalin, Toluene Di-isocyanate (TDI) and Di-Nitrotoluene. These
plants are successfully running at 100% capacity and passed Licensors test.
Other units in SADARA includes Mixed Feed Cracker, Polyethylene solution, Amines etc…for

Appointed as SME for Hydraulics, and Heat transfer.
Few Key Success Stories @SADARA are as listed below:
• Ethanol Production project to aid Saudi Ministry of Health in the fight against Coronavirus
and bring social benefit to Saudi Arabia and honor to SADARA.
• Performed a detail analysis in TDI unit of SADARA for CO excess recovery. Provided
recommendation and solution which earned 5 MM$ savings to SADARA.
• A 7MW exchanger generating 42 barg steam had failed during plant start-up, in Nitric Acid
Unit. Alternative solutions were explored with Licensor and implemented to replace the
exchanger. The plant was put on stream with 80% capacity. Dedicated detail Process
engineering support was provided throughout the engineering phase.
• During Creditors Reliability Test (CRT), critical exchanger failed in Dinitro-toluene unit. The
exchanger tubes were leaking and were plugged. The exchanger thermal performance was
evaluated and the plant capacity limit was defined to 85%, accordingly other major aspects
were taken into consideration and successfully CRT was completed in one time.
• Resolved major Safety concern in NAC and SAC units, by design and development of
EBVs.
• A detailed and complex cooling water hydraulic network was developed for Chem-II
isocyanate unit. In addition, large numbers of hydraulic networks were also evaluated to
resolve flow imbalance, line sizing and perform NPSH calculations.
• Process Engineering Support to Plants in Turnarounds.
• PSV rating and sizing using ASPEN Safety Module. Many PSVs were evaluated and rated
to check their relieving capacity, for different credible scenarios.
• Evaluated large numbers of Heat Exchangers including proprietary exchangers made of
tantalum, Niobium, Glass Lined and other exotic materials across SADARA units, using
HTRI.
• Support to Process Safety in Dispersion Analysis modelling for Chlorine, Dowtherm,
Ammonia and Hydrogen.
• Surge analysis was done for Liquid Ammonia transfer line.
• Participates in HAZOP studies, for any new modification in plant.
• Participate and provide processing engineering support in Root Cause Investigation.
• Evaluate Pumps for deadhead protection to be in compliance in Sadara standards.
• Simulate section/units in ASPEN Plus, as required for plant startup.
• Water Hammer issues due to slug flow in steam condensate line were evaluated and
resolved.
• Steam trap systems were evaluated for back pressure.
• Develop and prepare Business Opportunity Plan (BOP) for plant improvement ideas
driven by Safety, Reliability and Plant operability.
• Perform preliminary cost estimation +50% for BOP, using SADARA standard cost
estimation template
• Training, mentoring and coaching to new hired Saudi engineers.
I have been recognized in various occasion for start-up support and performing critical process
engineering studies.
