Working onboard a container ship as an oiler, I had these responsibilities and tasks:

- Assist in start-up and shut-down of the main engine and engine room machinery.
- Monitor equipment, check gauges, record readings and keep engine room log.
- Troubleshoot broken equipment and make needed repairs.
- Overhaul auxiliary parts from engine room machinery.
- Help engineers in operating, maintaining and repairing vessel's machinery.
- Daily tank soundings and safety inspections.
- Assist with bunkering operations.
- Participate in emergency drills and fire drills.
