Elevated Stations
Responsible as GDC technical lead for the conceptual design of typical elevated stations. The elevated station structure consists of a roof canopy, platforms, concourse, basement, entrances and footbridges. The roof canopy is supported on six concrete plinths at the platform level. The platform viaduct structure is designed as a three span simply supported post- tensioned concrete box girder with deck slab Continuity. The designs are carried out using building information modelling techniques.

The concourse structure consists of a balanced cantilever post tensioned slab that is supported by a central spine beam spanning between concrete columns that transmit the loadings to the piled foundations. The basement structures containing the MEP areas are designed as reinforced concrete retaining walls supported on a raft foundation. The entrance structures and enclosure structures at the platform and concourse levels are designed as steel frames. The footbridges connecting the entrance structures to the concourse level have been designed using Vierendeel girders with a composite slab at the walkway level. Project Value aprox 5bn GBP.

At Grade Stations
Responsible as GDC Technical lead for the conceptual design of At Grade station. The At-Grade station structure consists of mainly of the roof canopy, basements, platform, concourse, entrances and the footbridges. The canopy structure is partly supported on the station structure and on independent plinths/piles. The structure is designed as a moment resisting reinforced concrete frame below the concourse level and steelwork is used above concourse to support the roof and external glazing. The basement is designed as reinforced concrete retaining wall integral with a rafts slab. The platform structure is separated from the concourse structure on either side by pro-vision of movement joints. The platform structure is designed as reinforced box. The entrance structures and enclosure structures at the platform and concourse levels are designed as steel frames. The footbridges connecting the entrance structures to the concourse level have been designed using Vierendeel girders with a composite slab at the walkway level.

Mosque station is a reinforced concrete underground box 281 x 37m with typical grid spacing of 12.5m x 18.5m. The roof, concourse and the intermediate level slabs are designed to be integral with the reinforced concrete retaining walls with a central line of columns. The entire station is founded on a raft slab with cut and cover method for tunnelling works. The station is accessible via above ground entrance structures. The proposed construction method is bottom up with provision of temporary works during the construction stage.

Hermain Interchange Station is a reinforced concrete underground box 345 x 37m with typical grid spacing of 12.5m x 18.5m. The overall depth of the station is approximately 40m below the proposed ground level. The station supports two levels of railway, three levels of car parking, and an integral underpass bridge supporting the boulevard. The station is accessible via 4 above ground entrance structures. All slabs are designed to be integral with the reinforced concrete retaining walls and a central line of columns.

Birmingham Gateway station redevelopment project

This project involved complete redevelopment of the entire station building, with introduction of new grand shopping central and retail outlets, new facilities, a grand atrium and a new multi-story car parking, whilst the station remained operational. The project was executed using many novel design approaches and has received many awards globally.

I was responsible for reviewing and approving 3rd party designs for permanent and temporary works ensuring compliance with the Network Rail standards and Engineering Management Plan. Part of my responsibilities was to regularly interface with external engineering consultants, contractors, scheme project managers, construction managers and planners to discuss technical issues and provide technical assistance throughout the execution of the works. My other responsibilities included carrying out site visits to check compliance of works with the approved designs. I was also responsible for the management of various design packages working with the Principal Contractor, sub-Contractors, and designers in the development of design and engineering specifications, coordination of multidisciplinary designs, project team management, interface management, and management of Network Rail’s GRIP processes for various projects.
