(Ethane cracking unit)
Ethane cracking unit, producing more than 1.44 MM t/yr. of ethylene, propylene, hydrogen and other co-products. The purpose of the plant is to produce polymer grade ethylene and propylene and a small amount of pure hydrogen. It additionally supplies other complex facilities with utilities as steam and refrigerant. In principal the ethylene plant consists of three parts:
• Cracking furnaces in which the chemical decomposition reaction takes place which transforms ethane to a number of hydrocarbons and hydrogen.
• The separation part in which the furnace products are separated by physical processes as distillation.
• The energy section in which main utilities as steam and fuel gas are processed.
Shift supervisor Job Description:
•Supervise, on shift, the operation of the units in the assigned section to ensure that plant throughput and products meet company requirements and specifications in the most economical and safe manner within the designated area and control.
•Supervise the performance of the shift team to ensure meeting the shift assignments.
•Cascade all the communications for shift and operations updates to ensure consistent and timely information is conveyed to the team, while ensuring that the safety critical procedures are implemented.
•Monitor, communicate and report any important information regarding the operations, assets, and HSE or emergencies during the shift to shift in-charge, and the respective team.
•Complete shift supervisor log book and other work reports noting state of operating plants, corrective action taken and highlighting other items of plant that need further attention.
•Administer the common checklists as per the operations procedures to ensure completion of checklists as per the schedule.
•Organize, supervise the shift operations of all assigned operating units and systems to produce or facilitate the production of the planned quantities of specified products safely and at optimum cost.
•Coordinate and supervise on assigned shift, the operation of EU/OCU units in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the production, processing and distribution of diversified OL products meeting specified qualities and quantities within the designated area
•Take over shift from off going Shift Supervisor with details of any operational irregularities or changes during previous shift and hands over job and completed own log book in an orderly and efficient manner to incoming Shift Supervisor.
•Conduct daily inspection tours or review the field logbooks of all operating units to ensure smooth running and to ensure that all critical equipment such as pumps, compressors, furnaces, boilers, reactors, etc. are in good operating condition to ensure the safe custody of all Company assets under his responsibility.
Maintenance Coordination
•Coordinate periodic checks, adjustments and maintain follow up on all maintenance activities in his respective operation area.
•Review operating data, monitor general operational or maintenance activities in the various sections and establishes status at start of shift.
•Participate in critical operating procedures on his shift to provide control and coordination which includes start-up and shutdown, commissioning and testing of new equipment and dealing with any emergency which may arise according to correct procedure.
•control and coordinate shutdown and start-up operations; includes reviewing control panel instruments, DCS/ESD, APC System and directing site operations to start-up units in proper sequence and at correct manner to avoid damage to equipment or personnel.
•Initiate maintenance requests for all routine repairs, and assist in planning major maintenance requirements and undertakes shift supervision of crews performing maintenance or repair works.
•Check and review maintenance work carried out on operating units during shift and directs the preparation of units for start-up or shutdown.
Shift - Product quality Control
•Review laboratory test results to ensure that products meet specifications and arranges for adjustments to be carried out to maintain quality standards.
•Review and monitor in his shift the operating data relating to the production and operation of various operating equipment.
•Participate in product quality' reviews and complaints to ensure proper realization and analysis of the root causes.
•Review, and communicate the quality control and laboratory reports to the plant management and professionals for the necessary actions and records.
HSE & Emergency Readiness
•Supervise plant start-ups, shutdown and emergencies as per established operating procedures.
•Approve emergency work orders and issues work, entry and excavation certificates in conjunction with Safety & Fire personnel.
•Monitor that work permit procedure and other applicable safety procedures are followed during the shift.
•Ensure compliance by subordinate personnel with all safety and fire regulations, including the use of protective clothing and equipment.
•Write and discuss accident, Incident and near miss reports with management and subordinates in order to avoid recurrence.
•Conduct plant inspection tours and safety topic group meetings, and participate in the housekeeping activities and preparations.
•Assist in training and plants area certification of Operators and Developees to safely and efficiently perform their work assignments and prepares on-the-job training programs.
•Conduct regular simulated emergency checks for his subordinates.
•Maintain and arrange utility hose inspection/testing/color coding, bunker gear, PPE supply (hand gloves, dust mask, earplug, etc.)
Equate Petrochemical company was joint venture between Dow Chemical company USA and Petrochemical company (PIC) Kuwait. This state of art technology plant is one of the major producers of Polyethylene, Ethylene glycol, Polypropylene and Ethylene in the Middle East region. Butene-1 Unit is integral part of Polyethylene plant (IFP Technology, France) 20, 000 TPA capacities. This unit consists of Reactor, separation systems like Thin film evaporator (TFE), conventional distillation columns and Aluminum alkyl systems.

•Had been to HUNTSMAN CHEMICAL CORPORATION polystyrene plant in Chesapeake, VIRGINIA, USA for management operations training in between November’ 94 to December’ 94.
• Promoted from Shift officer.
•Handling of shift independently in the production of various grades of Polystyrene.
•Controlling quality of product in the operations for various grades of Polystyrene.
•Possess through knowledge and experience of startup, shutdown, handling emergencies and trouble shootings.
