hospital and the medical clinic buildings. It has regular employees and medical
doctors, all trained to provide the highest quality and excellent personalized
patient health care. It is a private stock corporation established for the purpose of
creating that medium where physicians and other related health and medical
science practitioners can channel their competent skills and learning for the care
of the sick, in particular, and for preservation and improvement of health and
general. The Intensive Care Unit consists of 8 beds, with a nurse-patient ratio of
1:1, provides intensive care and individualized total nursing care of the critically-
ill patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
* Job Description:
A. INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
As an ICU nurse, I am responsible in monitoring and rendering intensive total
nursing care of the critically-ill patient. I assist in the maintenance of equipments
within the unit, observes aseptic technique and disinfection of paraphernalias
used by the patient and administers prescribed medications. Follows up
laboratory report and inform physician of recent laboratory results. Charts and
records all patient data collected. I provide direct and individualized nursing care
to patient based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to
general nursing care, responsibilities of Critical Care Nurses include (but are not
limited to):
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Plans for a total nursing care of critically ill patients.
a) Gives skilled intensive nursing care to patients according to their individual
needs, utilizing the nursing process or scientific problem nursing approach.
b) Alertness in rendering cardio - pulmonary resuscitation especially in
emergency situation like Code 99.
c) Makes a continuous assessment of the patient’s condition and makes
accurate recording of unusual findings through the use of:
* Monitoring devices - interpreting EKG tracings and dangerous
arrhythmias and report to resident physician immediately for the
necessary action.
* Direct observation - keen observant of neurological status.
* Physical examination - identifies relevant signs and symptoms.
* Knowledge of the different laboratory procedures and its normal values.
2. Skillful and able to perform the following:
a) IV insertion and blood extraction
b) Use of equipment for cardiac monitoring and respiratory assistance
c) Able to take EKG 12 leads
d) Knows how to set up oxygen compressed air
3. Maintains and establishes good working relationship in the area.
4. Provides emotional support to the patient and members of the family.
5. Supervises new staff and students undergoing orientation to the ICU.
6. Responsible in the cleanliness, orderliness, checking of stock and supplies,
reporting out of order equipments.
7. Administers medication, carries out treatments and procedures.
8. Participates in the general activities of the Nursing Service.
9. Performs other assignment as directed.
