Specialized in HSE Training and implementation of HSEQ Management Systems. The last 1 ½ year or so I have mainly worked for Integrated Management Dynamics. They have a contract with Murray & Roberts to develop a system to review and audit the implementation (and the effectivesness of the implementation) of all of their corporate HSE Standards worlwide. The work that I have done for them covered all 3 major divisions: “Oil and Gas”, “Underground Mining” and “Power and Water”. Site HSE Lead Onshore at Shell
  • Egypt - Alexandria
  • July 2013 to June 2014

I was the Site HSE Lead for the construction of a CO2 Removal Plant in the Western Dessert of Egypt. My main task was to lead the Bapetco HSE Team and coach and train the main (sub) contractors to ensure full compliance with Shell’s HSE Standards. I personally supervised all the major lifting and hoisting taking place and the modifications and hook-up with the existing life Gas Plant and Gas Transmission Pipelines. Critical to the success of the project was a strict adherence to the Bapetco Permit To Work (PTW) system and the alignment of the work with the relevant Shell Safety Standards.

Construction HSE Supervisor/Coordinator Onshore at Chevron
  • Nigeria
  • July 2007 to June 2013

Chevron build a 10 Billion US$ Gas to Liquid Plant in Escravos Nigeria. I was contracted by Chevron for the construction and the pre-commissioning phase. I was on the project from the beginning. Directly and indirectly (contractors and sub-contractors) I had +/- 45 HSE professionals reporting to me and I was responsible for training and coaching them. The main contractors Daewoo Engineering that I was responsible for were without a Lost Time Injury for more than 12 million man-hours and we have also recorded 10 million man-hours without a recordable incident. Critical for the success of our safety performance however was the interface role I played between Chevron management and the Management of Daewoo and the Daewoo sub-contractors. At the end of the project I was closely involved in the chemical cleaning taking place of all the and the interface work related to the existing Gas Plant at Escravos. I was also directly involved in the introduction of gas in parts of the plant and managing the interface with the construction work that was still taking place. This was a very hands-on job that required me to be on the site most of the time. It was my daily routine to supervise all the major lifts and to take all the HSE critical PTW for the day and check their compliance on-site.

Construction Safety Advisor Offshore at Chevron
  • Nigeria
  • December 2006 to June 2007

I was contracted by Chevron as a Safety Advisor for the offshore installation and commissioning of a well platform and a gas gathering and compression platform. Although no gas was introduced during my stay I was closely involved with the commissioning of all electrical equipment on the Platform. Because of the close cooperation with the PTW office we ensured that no major accidents were recorded during the project.

Construction Safety Advisor - Shipyard at Chevron
  • Korea (South)
  • December 2005 to November 2006

Hyundai Heavy Industry built for Chevron a well platform and a gas gathering and compression platform in Korea. I was contracted by Chevron as a Safety Advisor for the construction of these platforms at the Hyundai Shipyard in Ulsan. Part of my job was the ensure compliance of the 2 platforms with the Chevron requirements for “Safety in Designs”.

SEAs (Specialists in Environmental management & Audits) is a world-class management consultancy based in South Africa and specialising in the development and implementation of management systems, training and auditing. It was founded in 1991. I joined the team in January 1998 as a third partner in the business. A key element of our approach to HSE MS implementation has been through conducting customised in-house training courses. By adopting this approach our clients are not only prepared for certification but also acquire the internal capability to maintain and improve their management systems. Typical training courses we have conducted:
• Introduction to ISO 14001 (or OHSAS 18001)
• HSE management systems
• ISO 14001 (lead) auditors training course
• Environmental awareness training for workers
• Hazard identification, etc.

Of particular relevance was my involvement with Telkom, the state communication company, where I worked full-time for a year as an environmental manager. I have also guided a number of Sappi Pulp & Paper Mills and several mining companies successfully through their ISO 14001 certification.

During this time I also worked for DNV Singapore, training DNV personnel in preparation for their accreditation as ISO 14001 certification auditors. Among many other jobs in Asia, I did a number of environmental audits for Pertamina, the Indonesian state oil company.
