Assistant Head of Year

June 2022 - Present

Lea Manor High School

London, United Kingdom

June 2022 - Present

I was appointed by the Director of the Chiltern Learning Trust to strengthen pastoral systems in a school previously graded Inadequate by Ofsted. Using my expertise in behaviour management, safeguarding, and student welfare, I played a central role in driving whole-school improvement and embedding a culture of accountability, inclusion, and excellence.

My work focused on developing and managing high-quality provision for student attendance, behaviour, care, welfare, and guidance, while holding responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school. I participated in strategy discussions, inter-agency meetings, and student assessments to ensure coordinated support for all pupils.

I took overall pastoral responsibility for a full year group of over 200 students, maintaining accountability for their progress, attainment, and wellbeing. I identified where intervention was required—addressing underachievement, implementing additional challenge, and liaising with external agencies. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, I contributed to strategic planning and delivered presentations across the Chiltern Learning Trust on effective pastoral leadership.

Collaboration with the Designated Safeguarding Lead formed a key part of my role, ensuring that all safeguarding matters were addressed promptly and recorded accurately. I led weekly tutor meetings, tracked attendance and wellbeing data, and worked closely with parents through meetings, phone calls, and written communication to resolve concerns and promote engagement.

I organised and led assemblies, celebration events, and intervention programmes, coordinated parental mentor meetings, and supported key school events such as open days and parents’ evenings. I also took responsibility for all extracurricular activities and trips for my year group, ensuring safe and inclusive delivery.

Through liaison with multi-agency teams, I identified pupils with underlying behavioural or emotional needs and implemented targeted interventions to support progress and wellbeing. I ensured accurate record-keeping and maintained detailed student files for safeguarding and pastoral tracking.

Safeguarding formed a significant part of my remit. I ensured staff were confident in applying the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies, informed the DSL and Headteacher of ongoing investigations, attended case conferences, provided safeguarding reports to the governing board, and maintained the highest standards of confidentiality and data protection.
I promoted a culture of listening to students, ensuring their voices informed decision-making and pastoral support. I also managed the secure transfer of safeguarding files when students moved schools, completed safer recruitment training, and supported the school in maintaining compliance with safeguarding and data protection standards.
My leadership has encompassed:
Student wellbeing and behaviour management
Safeguarding and child protection leadership
Mentoring and conflict resolution
Parent and community engagement
Attendance and academic monitoring
Team leadership and staff development
Through these responsibilities, I have strengthened pastoral systems, improved staff confidence in behaviour management, and ensured that every student under my care was supported to achieve both academically and personally within a safe, nurturing environment.
