XCP Overhead line full refurbishment:
This scheme involved the changing of all the aging fittings and conductor on the XCP circuit. The old conductor was of a twin lynx core only greased configuration; this was then changed to a single araucaria fully greased configuration. The entire insulator fittings were changed from the old porcelain type to the newer glass insulators.

On this project, I was heavily involved at the development stages, which consisted of both preparing tender documents and reviewing/scoring tender returns. As the project manager/Engineer on this scheme, I was tasked with the day to day running of the job; this consisted of managing the contract (Early warnings & compensation events), liaising with key stakeholders and ensuring that the job was running to time, cost and scope without safety or quality being compromised.

Fourstones 49.9MW windfarm connection:
The ‘Fourstones' project came about as a result of a customer connection request. Vattenfall, who are the owners of a wind farm, are looking to connect into a DNO network which is located beside the National Grid Fourstones transmission substation. In order to allow the DNO to accept this increase in load, they need to connect to National Grid's 275KV network and this will be done via a new 33KV/275KV transformer. The works involved include the delivery of a new SGT and extension of a mesh corner substation.

On this project I have gained valuable experience in dealing with the tender process right from the invitation to tender stage until assessing tender returns. I was also given the responsibility of managing the SGT delivery. This involved working closely with the SGT contractors and arranging a community relations team to assist with the delivery. I have also had to arrange and chair meetings between the SGT manufacturers, the haulier companies and the mains works contractors so that any issues involving programme or design could be resolved at an early stage.

Directorate and Business Unit: Overhead Lines and Cables (Capital Delivery)

Overview - Supporting the delivery of various capital projects to time, cost and specification (works information) in accordance with NEC3 and EPC contracts. Ensuring that health, safety, environmental and quality issues are managed throughout the lifecycle of a project.

Key Tasks that I am responsible for:

•SHES Management - Carrying out numerous documented site safety walks and following up on actions via weekly client/contractor meetings. Scoring the contractors safety rating on a month by month basis which is used as a key performance indicator (KPI) under clause X20 of EPC contracts. Carrying out numerous effective safety discussions with site personnel and investigating and closing out safety incidents/near misses. Ensuring company safety standards are being followed at all times on site. Reviewing and submitting site waste management plans and environmental documentation.
•Project Commissioning - Attending commissioning meetings and providing input to commissioning issues where possible. Working with various stakeholders to ensure quality solutions are provided and that snags are identified and rectified in a timely manner. Ensuring accurate asset data is captured after the commissioning stage to ensure National Grid maintains a full set of records for their assets.
•Project Delivery - Help develop the schemes during the development stages of the project to ensure that the project scope (works information) is clearly defined and that the projects can be realistically delivered. Managing various stakeholders internal and external to the project, ensuring that projects are delivered to cost, time and specification. Ensure that the contract drawing list is kept up to date on site and that all ‘for construction' and ‘as-built' drawings are completed in a timely manner. Completing monthly project status reports and issuing them to higher management. Managing various contract types (NEC3, AAA, EPC) which involves settling compensation events (variations). Reviewing the risk register on a monthly basis and profiling risk across the lifecycle of a project. Reviewing and rejecting/accepting construction programmes
•Project Finances/Commercial - Managing and monitoring finances of various schemes ranging in value from £6m up to £32m. Chairing monthly financial review meetings with the contractor and accurately forecasting both Internal and external costs over the whole life cycle of the project. Using earned value calculations (SPI & CPI) to assess the condition of the project.

Knaresborough OHL fittings refurbishment:
The Knaresborough project came about as a result of the need to reinforce the Ferrybridge ring to deal with increased demand over the last 15 years. The OHL scheme involves the uprating of the PHG line (that connects into Knaresborough) from 132KV to 275KV. The XC route which connects Monk Fryston and Poppleton is also T'eed into the PHG route via a new XD route. This will have the effect of creating two new 275KV circuits which are the Monk Fryston - Knaresborough and the Poppleton - Knaresborough circuits.

As the project Engineer/manager, I have been heavily involved with this project from first site access right through to the reinstatement works that are happening at present. Throughout this project, I gained both a lot of valuable on-site experience and project management experience by working closely with the project team.

Stoke Bardolph OHL diversion:
The overhead line works involved the construction of a new 9 arm DJT terminal tower in order to turn-in the High Marnham-Ratcliffe 400kV circuit into the new Stoke Bardloph substation, forming a High Marnham-Stoke Bardolph and Ratcliffe-Stoke Bardolph 400kV circuit. The driver for this scheme was the result of the growth in electricity demand in the Nottingham area.

On this project I was involved with looking after the reinstatement works. This involved keeping a site diary to track contractor progress and activity on site. Other tasks included sensible monitoring (HSG65) of the contractor and constant liaison with Gedling wildlife trust to ensure that they were satisfied with a bridleway track reinstatement.

Directorate and Business Unit: Major Infrastructure Development.

Overview - Supporting the development of Major projects (100m +). In my Job role, I was responsible for developing the substation extension at Harker to accommodate two new circuits. I was also responsible for attending and participating in stakeholder review meetings and for arranging key stakeholder events.

Key Tasks

During the development of the Harker substation extension, my key tasks were to:

•Develop four different substation extension solutions to accommodate two new circuits coming from Moorside into Harker substation. These developments had to be future proofed by considering the option of another two circuits being added to the substation in years to come.
•Develop the layout plans/designs (including operational diagrams) for the different solutions using the help of a CAD technician.
•Calculate indicative costs for the four different solutions using a development price list that I received from the commercial team. This allowed me to do a whole life cost analysis on each of the solutions
•Evaluate each of the solutions based on cost, time of build, difficulty of build, way leaves issues, outage restrictions etc. in order to find the best solution
•Draft up a high level programme of works which was split into detailed design, development, Civil Works, M & E works and commissioning
•Draft up stage by stage diagrams of the final solution using Microsoft Visio

During my time spent on this project, I gained good project management and development skills along with good technical knowledge of substations.

Other key tasks carried out while working in MID include:

•Arranging and facilitating site visits for Key stakeholders including County Councils and National Parks.
•Participating in Stakeholder Reference Group meetings in Cumbria regarding route corridors/options for a major OHL project.
•Helping with the Development Consent Order that was submitted to the planning inspectorate in order to achieve planning permission for the Job

The North West Coast Connection scheme has come about as a result of the need to make the network in North West of England more robust due to the large power loads that are coming down from Scotland into England. My responsibility in this major scheme was to develop an extension onto the current Harker GIS substation to accommodate a possible four new circuits.

On this project I gained a lot of technical and development experience through drafting up Operational diagrams and carrying out Optioneering on four different possible solutions. I also gained a lot of project management experience due to looking at programmes along with calculating whole life cycle costs.
