Dynamic Analysis of Steam Turbine Generator Foundation for BAPCO, Bahrain:
The Steam Turbine Generator has a Generator, Gear Box and Turbines. These units are installed on 14.5mX6.9mX1.6m deep Raft foundation. The foundation is reviewed for Free Vibration Analysis to check the frequency of foundation to be maintained at +/-20% away from the equipment frequency and also reviewed for Forced Vibration Analysis to check the amplitudes of the foundation due to dynamic loads not to exceed the allowable limits as specified by the equipment vendor.

220kV/66kV Substations:
More than 35 numbers of 220kV/66kV BSP, City & Loop Type substations all over the country of Bahrain were proposed by Ministry of Electricity & Water Authority. These substations have 220kV GIS Bldg., 66kV & 11kV Switchgear Bldg., 150MVA & 66kV Transformers and 220kV & 21kV Reactors, NER, NES, Battery Room, Control Room, Capacitor Banks, House Transformers etc. The buildings are 8m to 12m high single storey building with 5T Crane Girders and the roof has max of 320thk Precast Hollow Core slabs spanning for13m. There are free standing walls up to 9.0m high. The building is supported on a 450mm thick Raft Slab. Some of the large substations are Addur, Tilal A’ Ali, Diyar Al Muharrak, Dahiyat Al Seef, Shamal Al Fateh etc.

Use of 355grade as per BS5950 specifications was considered. Wind Calculations based on BS6399: Part 2 for open sided buildings indicated horizontal net pressure of 1.3kPa and an upward net pressure of 2.3kPa. These were modeled in StaadPro software and verified by hand calculations and sections were optimized.

Sail Monument in Steel:
The Sail Monument is a double curvature right-angled triangular structure 15m high x15m breadth cladded with Fiber Glass Reinforced Plastic(FGRP) and this is analyzed as a cantilever steel structure against wind pressure in StaadPro software using prismatic members and designed manually as per BS5950 using 15mm thick plates with welded Flanges wherever necessary (making up a built-up section).
