Measurement While Drilling is the process of using sensors located in a drilling
assembly to assess certain downhole parameters. The data gathered by an MWD
tool is transmitted to surface, in most cases, by a method known as Mud Pulse
Telemetry. The flow of the drilling fluid, which is pumped downhole, can be
momentarily restricted as it passes through the MWD tool. This creates a pressure
pulse which travels up the drillstring and can be detected at surface. The MWD
tool’s ‘pulser’ produces a pattern of these pressure pulses, which can be decoded
to retrieve the downhole data for surface processing.
A mud engineer (correctly called a Drilling Fluids Engineer. He works on an oil well or gas well drilling rig, and is responsible for ensuring the properties of the drilling fluid, also known as drilling mud, are within designed specifications.
