Environmental Monitoring Information System of Kuwait (eMISK) is an ambitious project initiated by Environment Public Authority (EPA) of Kuwait for establishing and maintaining a comprehensive geo-environmental database of Kuwait environmental indicators.
eMIKSwaste is the component focused with materializing waste management environmental data analysis and reporting to Kuwait’s EPA being the ultimate authority in Strategy setting and monitoring to be set by the National Waste Management Strategy resulting from the waste surveys assessing quantities and type of waste generated, participating in workshops with the relevant stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. The four (4) year project has been awarded to M/s. Fraunhofer UMSICHT (German Research Institute) in January 2017 to develop National Waste Management Strategy for the state of Kuwait.

During the course of my assignment, salient duties carried out included but not limited to:
• Providing technical consultancy & support to Fraunhofer Umsicht Consortium team, Kuwait EPA.
• Lead Surveying team interviewing/sampling various waste generation sectors: Industrial, Medical/HealthCare, residential, commercial, construction & demolition, sewage sludge, green waste, among other sectors.
• Negotiated and administrated the local support services with the subcontractors
• Managing a team of field surveyors by training, coaching, mentoring in interviews
Lead a cross functional team to manage the bidding process and produce competitive technical/commercial proposal for environmental infrastructure projects under privatization PPP schemes (water/ waste water treatment, Solid Waste Management, etc…)
Review the technical concept design for due diligence during bidding (wastewater/waste to energy)
Negotiate and contribute in drafting key agreements with partners and advisors
Evaluate project advisors' proposals and assist in final advisors selection
Review design software input/output assumptions (e.g. Biowin), cost estimation of several STP components (Activated sludge, MLE, MBR, BNR, SBR) and its various configurations to be used in comparison for project finance models.
Participated in the commissioning & the operation of two STP's (tertiary treatment, MLE) of sizes (150, 000 & 300, 000 m3/d):
o Prepared daily reports during commissioning period and final commissioning / plant proving report.
o Provided technical support to O&M team by analyzing process performance, troubleshooting process upsets and assessing
operational performance efficiency.
o Communicated technical performance parameters and issues in meetings and in writing to client's representative.
o Assess performance of KPIs (energy efficiency, chemical/polymer consumption); initiate/implement suggestions for operational performance improvement
Prepared technical proposals for the construction and operation of environmental related tenders, presenting environmental solution in solid waste management (sorting, biological processes/treatment, waste to energy, RDF/SRF preparation from Municipal, commercial and industrial waste), plastic recycling, water treatment/desalination, contaminated site remediation
Led the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001: 2004 Standards
Prepared Waste Management, energy efficiency plans for construction projects.
Monitor projects’ compliance to environmental permits, CEMP, EIA, etc… liaising with client’s environmental consultant/regulatory authorities; performed environmental sampling, training project staff to address environmental challenges.
Coordinated EPC & Operation project activities for the Solid Waste Management Treatment and disposal project in Abu Dhabi to execute a Build Own Operate (BOT) project of integrated Solid Management . Activities included
Coordinated waste characterization/audit studies
Liaised with Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) and environmental consultants for the project to meet regulatory compliance requirements
Assessed technical operational practices & mobile equipment selection to best meet the quality, schedule and budget requirements
Prepared and delivered technical presentations to stakeholders
Checking the submission of process equipment suppliers’ to ensure meeting contractual and technical obligations and budget; provide value added engineering input to process & operational requirements.
Facilties included:
o MSW sorting plant ; Green waste composting
o 5 Transfer Stations, logistics
o 2 Sanitary Landfills
Prepared the technical/commercial proposals and assisted in the cost estimation of construction, operation and maintenance (O&M) for utilizing advanced waste treatment technologies in liaison with professional waste consultants and technical partners.
Proposals included offering technologies for municipal/industrial waste sorting, thermal treatment (mass burn incineration, gasification, plasma technology), MBT (Mechanical Biological Treatment, e.g. composting, anaerobic digestion, biodrying), preparation of RDF/SRF from MSW/C&I wastes, used plastic washing/recycling.
Acted as representative of technologies of several renowned environmental companies in municipal/industrial wastewater treatment, water treatment, bioremediation, solid waste management such as Ionics Italba, EnzymeTech, amongst many others.
Responsible for cost estimation of environmental related tenders (waste water treatment), contacting potential clients, marketing company's versatile environmental services.
Researched and helped identifying potential areas of growth of environmental projects in Kuwait and suggesting a suitable technology.
Conducted research about anaerobic biological treatment of landfill leachate, a highly toxic wastewater. Wrote a technical paper and a thesis as a requirement of the Masters of Applied Science in Chemical Engineerng.
Worked as a tutor assistant for several core and elective chemical engineering courses, e.g.: Air pollution, Biological processes in wastewater treatment, Chemical reaction engineering, Statistical Process Control, Fluid Flow, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
* Assessed the effectiveness of using pervaporation to separate Benzene-Cyclohexane mixture, and acquired a good knowledge of RO, membrane separation technology.
* Performed a series of single and mixture volatile organic gas permeation experiments and analyzed data gathered by the "Gas Chromatograph"
Thesis Topid Title: Hydraulic Overload of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) Reactor Treating Landfill Leachate from Industrial Waste Landfill. Courses included Membrane Technology, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Anaerobic Digestion, Adsorption, Water Treatment Unit Operations and Sludge Handling/Disposal.
