Dissertation: Competitive Resource Strategies: A Comparative Case Study on Dupont’s Strategies Abstract: The area of strategic planning research has always been focused on two main aspects, namely internal resources of firms and competitive environment. Many scholars and theorists would agree that these two aspects are equally important when it comes to strategy and strategic planning. However there are limited work that converge these two main concepts in such a way that the study of strategy would be more comprehensive. This may be due to the fact that the concepts of strategy, resources and environment are not only abstract but also multi-faceted. This study hopes to add some value to this multi-faceted academic field by introducing another look at firm resources and competitive environment in the hope to find some convergence between them. The theory of “resource strategies” was developed for this purpose and it is built mainly on the resource-based view of the firm and Tushman & Anderson’s (1986; 1990) works on organizational environment. Essentially, resource strategies are strategies that are di-rected to the treatment of firm resources. A resource strategy and environment fit framework involved the use of different resource strategy in different environmental context was proposed and subsequently tested by hypotheses. This is an exploratory study whereby a relatively new theory was developed and tested. Qualitative content analysis was employed for testing the theory of resource strategy and the hypotheses. Longitudinal case study method was used for this study to provide rich contextual information.
