Working as a freelance traffic engineer/analyst on a variety of traffic impact studies projects.
I have worked on a $22.5 billion Riyadh Metro Project (Line-3) as a traffic engineer reviewing the work of contractors working in a consortium during the project management and construction management stages. Work included reviewing traffic control and management plans, checking Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for temporary traffic works and detours, handling Road/Traffic Safety Audits, managing sites access and land expropriation issues with respect to contractual policies and regulations. Conducted day to day contractual correspondence with the Contractor and the Client and provided support to the Contract Department in dealing with the claims related to traffic management, site access and land expropriation issues put forth by the Contractor.
Worked on more than 15 major traffic and infrastructural development and improvement projects and more than 100 cases/problems submitted by the public to the Municipality related to traffic control and safety matters in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah city and its surrounding suburbs. Responsibilities included:
• Conducting detailed traffic analysis for the Intermediate Ring Road and more than 5 large sized residential communities;
• Preparing signage and pavement markings plans and traffic signal plans (where necessary) for the proposed infrastructural development and improvement projects;
• Designing signalized and un-signalized junctions and roundabouts where necessary;
• Providing traffic calming measures and safety plans for various neighborhoods in the city;
• Reviewing traffic impact studies reports for many proposed developments submitted to the Municipality;
• Checking the proposed parking plans provided for many historical mosques and commercial areas in the city to ensure that the parking provided was according to Municipal Bylaws and design standards;
• Developing detailed pedestrian route plans around Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi for the pilgrims visiting the Holy Mosque;
• Managing the teams responsible for conducting different kinds of traffic surveys in few parts of the city;
• To liaise with the client and government authorities officials regarding the traffic improvement plans and enforcement of traffic regulations;
• To coordinate with the Project Manager regarding the development and progress of running projects.
Worked on a number of traffic engineering and transportation planning projects ranging in size from single high rise tower building to huge master plans. Work included but was not limited to junction analysis, parking review, traffic management schemes, provision of overall access and traffic flow circulation, and review of transit facilities and their accessibility to the development. Responsibilities included:
• Preparation of inception reports which comprised of different aspects of the study i.e., study area land use, future land-use scenarios, scope of the study, study objectives, trip generation, access schemes, parking plans and overall traffic circulation;
• Supervising the traffic surveys needed for junctions to conduct traffic impact studies;
• Analyzing the traffic data collected from the field for different stages of the study as per the client’s requirement;
• Evaluating the junctions performance using different kinds of softwares like Synchro and Sidra;
• Selecting the junction type and its design based on the software output results;
• Improving the geometric design of the junctions as mitigating measure, where necessary;
• Providing different kinds of traffic signals like semi-actuated, actuated-coordinated etc. based on the signal design of the junction;
• Suggesting various suitable access control measures to ensure safety of vehicles and pedestrians;
• Checking the complete traffic circulation plans within the development and on the surrounding external roads;
• Ensuring that the parking provision was according to the authority’s given parking criterion and standards;
• Providing smooth and safe flow of traffic for the opening and future years with all mitigating measures suggested for the overall improvement of the traffic circulation plan;
• Carrying out the projects from their start to their final approval from the client and in the process preparing interim reports, Draft Final Reports and Final Reports;
• To liaise with the client and government authorities officials throughout the development and progress of all the projects assigned;
• To help in negotiations for the cost sharing issues between the client and the authorities.
Conducted traffic and financial analyses for different projects which were either Government funded or on BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) basis. Responsibilities included:
• Supervising the traffic surveys of different kinds like manual traffic counts, origin-destination, automatic traffic counts etc. for the collection of traffic data used as input variable for the traffic analysis of various projects;
• Managing and monitoring the surveying operations like setting out of surveying teams, timings, procedures and safety compliance in the conduction of surveys;
• Handling complete analysis of the traffic data ranging from the database construction to its analysis and eventual output processes with suggestions and recommendations for the improvement of traffic zones and regional traffic;
• Conducting detailed Estimation and Costing for Karachi Northern Bypass (KNB) project, checking its financial viability and discussing the master plan with stakeholders and negotiating the design and economic viability for the financial loan guarantees from the bank;
• Conducting the traffic analysis for the National Trade Corridor (NTC) project in the context of the future traffic forecast and infrastructural development and producing draft and final reports of the project;
• Preparing the complete traffic management plan before and after the construction of proposed Motorway M-9 project on BOT basis;
• Developing comprehensive signage and pavement markings plans for the Motorway M-9 project following MUTCD standards;
• To liaise with the client, arrange meetings with the stakeholders and prepare minutes of meetings;
• To coordinate with the Project Manager regarding the progress of the assigned projects.
Worked on traffic impact studies and traffic management projects and prepared the bidding proposals for different projects. Responsibilities included:
• Reviewing the land use and site planning for county and city projects;
• Usage of GIS software (Arc View, Arc Info) in developing the sign inventory project for FDOT District-3 area to map and identify conditions and deficiencies for route markers, trailblazing and overhead/illuminated signs;
• Collection of the traffic data for the area under study either using the model outputs or conducting traffic counts;
• Conducting the access and junction capacity analyses by using Synchro and HCS 2000 softwares to assess the impact of projected future year traffic;
• Reviewing the given design of the road and access layout for the development and the area under study and suggesting mitigation measures to improve the overall traffic conditions;
• Calculating delay and level of service (LOS) for failing junctions and provide suggestions for improvement by optimizing cycle length and signals coordination;
• Computing the trip generation, trip distribution, mode split and traffic assignment for the regional transportation development program for the projected future year 2020;
• Using Cube (travel demand forecast model) for the future projected capacity and infrastructural development estimates.
• Worked with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) on various projects.
• Coded the highway projects using TransCAD to run the New York Best Practices Model (which is an activity-based travel demand forecasting model) for the New York Metropolitan Region’s Conformity Analysis and Regional Transportation Plan (RTP).
• Cross verified the traffic model data with the traffic surveys data.
• Helped in computing all the 4-stages traffic and socio-economic data and running multiple iterations for the future projected year results.
• Conducted the post processing procedure using federally approved mobile source emission analysis software “Mobile 6.2” to meet the air quality conformity standards for the New York Metropolitan Region.
• Prepared a research paper proposing measures to reduce the idling of heavy-duty vehicles in the New York Metropolitan Region.
Supervised the construction of different sections of the 40 miles long Additional Carriageway on N-5 Highway from Nowshera to Hasanabdal under AASHTO guidelines and specifications and assisted in managing the daily working of the Asphalt Plant. Provided summarized progress reports to the Project Manager on daily basis.
