During my General Practice training, my placements were in Public Health, Care of Elderly and Trauma and Orthopaedics.

During public health placement I attended several CCG meetings, got involved in business planning and in Audit. This allowed me to understand commissioning of healthcare services, how to improve them and the importance of some of them such as immunisation and screening.
The role included involvement in both health protection and prevention services. This gave me a good exposure and understanding to management of communicable diseases and outbreak responses.

Other skills I have picked up in Care of Elderly placement included communication skills when carrying out advanced care plan discussions with patients and their families, dealing with palliative care and carrying out ward rounds in care homes, working as a team as there were lots of MDT meetings and discharge planning and having a holistic approach when dealing with chronic illness and several co-morbidities.

During Trauma and Orthopaedics placement I improved my skills in joint assessment and examination. I am more confident with interpretation of imaging and X-rays as well as management of common conditions. I attained a certificate in joint injections which I am now confident in carrying out. I also improved my suturing skills in theatre.
