Ship Repair Facility; November 2007 to Present.
Duties and responsibilities include: Monitoring repairs and overhauls of approximately diesel engines installed onboard units of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Fleet based in the Arabian Gulf. The diesel engines are both four stroke and two stroke supplied by the following manufacturers; Fairbanks Morse, MTU, Detroit Diesel, Perkins, Waukesha, Paxman Valenta, Rolls Royce, Onan and Caterpillar. Conducting troubleshooting, inspections and failure analysis on assigned units and preparing detailed technical reports that identifies damage and suspected root cause. Troubleshooting and monitoring repairs to diesel engine attached systems, control systems and surface ship auxiliary systems. These systems included seawater cooling systems, starting systems (hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical), variable pitch propeller hydraulic systems, low-pressure air systems for propulsion control, diesel engine electronic control and monitoring systems, steering systems and fire fighting systems. Assessing repairs conducted by maintenance personnel during Sea Trials to ensure maintenance standards required by the work packages has been met. Monitoring trends in equipment failures and utilizing these trends in the establishment of short term and long-term maintenance goals.

Performing analysis of spectrographic and physical property testing of lubricating and hydraulic oils. Writing technical reports identifying oil samples above warning limits and identifying corrective action required. Utilizing technical documentation, the Internet, and the Royal Saudi Naval Forces maintenance and logistics computer programs to identify and obtain obsolete material specifications. Consulting with manufacturers representatives on material and warranty issues. The Training of personnel in the use of precision measuring instruments, good engineering practices, technical
documentation, and basic engineering principles.
Accomplishments included establishing and maintaining oil analysis spreadsheets and utilizing this data to identify at least 2 impending failures saving a minimum of, dollars and man-hours in repairs. Conducting extensive research on rudder shaft packing, identifying wrong packing in use, which prevented repeated dry-dockings keeping ships operational. Performing troubleshooting and repairs on diesel control systems and cooling systems allowing ships to remain operational in adverse operating conditions.
