Industrial Hygiene, H&S Dept.

Roles and Responsibilities:
My roles and responsibilities are to provide subject-matter-expert support to 16 SABIC affiliates (HADEED, SAUDI KAYAN, SAFCO, KEMYA, SHARQ, UNITED etc.) in implementing Industrial Hygiene (IH) & Safety standards, lead IH committee by creating annual objectives, measure IH-KPIs and support sites to improve H&S performances, conduct H&S external audits and identify gaps for continuous improvements, conduct investigations for H&S incidents, provide replies to site-raised clarifications and maintain cordial relationships with affiliates’ Industrial Hygienists.


Major tasks accomplished
•Comprehensive Health Risk Assessment study: Lead the study in ARRAZI affiliate. All health related current and hidden risks were identified and captured in the study, under the structured hazard groups of Chemical, Physical, Biological, Ergonomics, Psychosocial exposures. Current and additional controls are identified to mitigate the risks. Many improvement actions were also identified. The study is expanded to other companies.
•Project Construction stage audits: Conducted risk based Health & Safety audits during expansion-project’s construction stage in compliance with Saudi-HCIS and SABIC-OMS standards, picked up both current and hidden unsafe acts and conditions, interviewed and trained staff on correct practices and finally submitted the findings report.
•Environment exposure analysis: Supported between local sites and SABIC India labs to identify the suitable sampling and analysis methods in order for labs to develop analytical capabilities for the chemicals (Formaldehyde, Xylene etc.) used in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
•Drinking water quality analysis report: To comply with Royal Commission regulation on drinking water, organized the analysis of water samples in SABIC & Royal Commission Environment labs. Arranged for the development of analytical capabilities for the 20 parameters in labs. Summarized the results and found deficiencies in certain minerals. Finally suggested ways to supplement the minerals.
•Creation of Carcinogen Chemicals’ selection guidelines: Created guidelines, reviewed over 5000 chemicals and identified over 300 new carcinogen chemicals in the 16 companies of KSA.
•Unified Heat Stress monitoring system: Implemented the OSHA / ACGIH standards’ requirements to monitor employees for heat stress during summer, unified the different practices in each company by correcting their systems and presented the success story in SABIC 2020 Conference

My roles and responsibilities were to provide leadership and mentoring to Managers, Supervisors and employees in all areas of manufacturing including safety, quality, effective use of personnel, ensuring compliance with all ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 rules and regulations, and enforcing all company policies and procedures fairly and equitably.
Roles and Responsibilities:
OSHA Health and Safety Management Implementation:
•Executing Quality, Health and Safety Management OHSAS 18001 plans in an effective manner.
•Conducting safety inspections/audits, Occupational health surveys and field auditing for compliance. Devising and implementing Emergency Response Plan for the operations.
•Conducting inspection & approvals of new equipment at vendor locations. Investigating all accidents, Occupational health issues and suggesting recommendations.
Fire Protection and Prevention
•Co-ordination and advising on firefighting facilities/ equipment management.
•Scheduling and planning functional testing, periodical maintenance. Conducting audits to ensure fire prevention measures are in place and identifying areas for improvement.
•Conducting training on Plant evacuation, and building fire alarms; as well as on HSE policies, procedures, loss prevention principles. Periodically reviewing training needs of Fire & Safety personnel and sending them for various courses.
Training
•Imparting Safety induction training, use of fire protection systems, Occupational health, emergency preparedness, etc.
Liaison Work
•Interacting with Government Authorities. Liaising with internal/ external fire and safety organizations

National Prawn Company is the World’s largest integrated aquaculture company, which possesses a production capacity of 50 tons of shrimps / day with over 2000 employees.


Achievements:
•Developed process model with Six sigma concepts to increase the shrimp processing capacity from 860 kg/hr to 1200 kg/hr in spiral freezer.
•Designed an excel sheet program to find the number of workers needed for Processing Plant as per products’ annual sales forecast projections. Once the different product’s projected quantities are entered into the sheet, total no. of men required is arrived programmatically. It all took just 20 minutes. The sheet is an outcome of the time-study details for the processing time of various products.
•Studied process methods to increase the production target with a cycle time of just 1 second / shrimp. Analyzed under 9 groupings of sources of variations. Increased the target from 120 trays / man / shift to 140 trays. Created a learning curve for the operation for a new employee. Suggested 9 points for process control.
•Conducted meetings across the department to reduce operation costs in shop floor and implemented new strategies in operation procedures, which resulted In savings of $150, 000.00
•Conducted FMEA study in cold-room and implemented the ideas for reducing 1st 3 risks. Non-value added activities had reduced much.
•Reduced the down time of Feed mill from 20% to 15% by using tools such as OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) methodologies.
•Redesigned/ updated the existing HR department forms, which were designed 3 years before, with changes as per current systems and practices.
•Helped departments to set “KPIs” during ISO audit, based on SMART guidelines

•Analyzed the sewing efficiency for production of various shoes’ styles by Line-balancing technique and fixed between 90% and 99% efficiency.
•As a Manager Leather-cutting, managed 40 employees, developed methods on minimizing excess leather consumption during leather cutting through process improvement and on-the-job instructions.
•Developed and implemented production targets for various manual and machine operations through time study.
•Designed and conducted two days program on “Seminar on productivity and quality” for production crew.
•Coordinated for students’ project on “Employees motivation”. Designed a questionnaire covering all aspects of company life, got true feedback, discussed with senior management to find solutions for areas of dissatisfaction.
