The central thrust of my Doctoral thesis is an examination of the development and applications of usury law within the Abrahamic religions. It aims to throw useful light on the relationship between laws on lending and credit on the one hand, and actual commercial practices, on the other; and to present a number of hypotheses regarding the following questions: How Islamic is Islamic banking today? Is its modus operandi interest free or interest based? Does it offer a viable alternative to banking capitalism or is it merely a variant of conventional banking?
