Alan Khan

I present a national talk radio show on the SABC on Lotus FM. Monday to Thursday between 19H00 and 20H00.

I was headhunted for the position of Senior Director: Corporate Affairs for the university in early 2011. I formally joined the DUT in July 2011. I am member of the Senior Executive Management team at the university. My key functions include corporate communications, internal communications, marketing, advertising, media relations, protocol, public relations, events, expos, conferences, community engagement, the design studio, printing services, registry, logistics and Alumni Relations. I manage a team of people who have specific objectives to reach. I am also the official Spokesperson for the university and I sit on key committees including, University Risk Committee and the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee on University Sustainability.

I was the Chief Executive Officer of Jacaranda 94.2 and Jacaranda RMfm. Jacaranda is South Africa’s number 1 independent radio station, in terms of ratings and revenue. I am a Director of the company and by virtue of my position on the Board and in the business; I also sit on the Board’s Audit Committee and Remuneration Committee. I am a member of the Kagiso Media Group Risk Committee and a member of the Kagiso Media BBBEE Monitoring and Compliance Committee. I am a member of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and sit on the Board of the Radio Committee of the NAB.

I was employed in the capacity of Deputy Managing Director of East Coast Radio, KZN’s biggest commercial radio broadcaster. As Deputy MD, I was responsible for overseeing managers in the Marketing, PR, Regulatory Affairs, Human Resources and CSI departments. Prior to being named Deputy MD in 2002, I was Editor: News, Sport & Current Affairs. This was an Executive Management position, which entailed management of staff and co-ordinating activities within the news and sport department. Responsible for the strategic planning, production and presentation of major events that demanded an outside broadcast, such as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, Comrades Marathon and 2003 Cricket World Cup. I have also presented the weekday morning show The BIG Breakfast, together with the lunchtime show and the afternoon drive show, Bumper to Bumper. In my time at East Coast Radio, I also produced and presented the weekly East Coast Radio Top 20 and the weekly world chart show, Global Hot Hits.

I was the presenter for SABC 2’s national breakfast television programme. I co-anchored the daily broadcasts. I have presented sport on am2day, and covered the first round of the 1999 Cricket World Cup from the UK. I was involved in financial, crime, political, business and medical reporting. I wrote the script for the programme and presented my own news reports.

Employed in the capacity as a senior radio presenter. My portfolio included compiling various programmes including the weekly Breakfast show; a current affairs and news talk programme called Capital Live; and the afternoon drive show. The talk show addressed a diverse area, which included sport, politics, crime, community safety, health, education, social and economic issues. I was appointed a member of the Interim Management Committee assigned to oversee Portfolio of Current Affairs, News and Sport and to manage the transition of the radio station post-democracy. Capital Radio was the first independent radio station in South Africa and started broadcasting in December 1979. Capital News was uncensored, unbiased and challenged the apartheid regime who tried to shut down the radio station which it viewed as a threat to its laws.

Station Director, portfolio included programming, studio management and live broadcasting. I was also a member of the Students Representative Council. Elected from 1991-1994. Vice President 1992. November 1991 National winner of the Camel Pyramid of Light South African Campus DJ Championship. I was also a member of the Technikon Academic Board by virtue of my role in student governance and represented the campus body on the Student Liaison Committee.

Employed as an assistant marketing manager, portfolio included in store marketing and public relations in addition to customer service. My job description also entailed corporate Market research and recruitment of clientele.
