Associate Director, Procurement Services and Retail Sales at Thompson Rivers University
  • Canada
  • January 2006 to June 2009

Responsible for Procurement Services, Campus and Distance Bookstores, Supply Chain and Material Management, and the establishment of retail sales opportunities. This was a new position at TRU with the expectation that I would review all current business operations, assess the needs of the internal and external stakeholders, and recommend process, policy and procedural changes to senior administration and then be responsible for ensuring the changes were communicated to the campus and external community. I was instrumental in changing many aspects of the University’s business operations including campus and distance bookstores and increasing revenues in each of the semesters while lowering fixed expenses. The culmination of my efforts thus far have been the total transformation of procurement and signing policies, moving away from a command and control model to that of a consultative and facilitative nature, ensuring that the University business is carried out with the highest level of personal and institutional integrity, that the process is open, fair, and transparent and that all qualified vendors have the opportunity to compete for the University’s business. I supervised over 40 people, assist with the management of $15M Ancillary Services budget, and sat on various University committees including: Ancillary Services, ERP Implementation Steering Committee, Joint Occupational Health and Safety, Open Learning course launching process committee, Labour Management Committee, Co-chair of the TRU United Way Campaign.

Senior Accountant at KPMG
  • Canada
  • September 2003 to January 2006

Responsibilities included preparing notices to readers, review engagements, audits and preparing personal and corporate taxes. Further to these, I gained extensive knowledge in auditing and the implementation of internal controls and procedures. Moreover, my audit experience has allowed me to gain valuable insight into various inventory management systems and controls. At my 2004 year-end performance review I received an ‘Exceptional Performer’ rating, KPMG’s highest performance achievement.

Owner at Kamloops Mazda/Kia
  • Canada
  • January 1995 to January 2000

In my second year as Sales Manager, Kamloops Mazda was proclaimed ‘Dealer of Distinction’, Mazda Canada’s top honor. Further to this, I attained ‘Master Sales Club’ honor, which is the top-level achievement for Mazda Sales Managers. One of the key responsibilities of the position was to purchase, maintain and turnover inventory. I was instrumental in establishing a new vehicle purchasing system that incorporated our requirements of forecasting sales and ordering vehicles requiring a three-month build time. I established B.C.’s strongest leasing portfolio for Mazda Credit by achieving 150% of new vehicle sales target. Duties included: coordinating the day to day business of the sales department, including supervising staff of Business Manager and salespeople; sales/marketing training; seeking out and building client base, maximizing customer satisfaction while maintaining dealership goals; liaising with Mazda Canada and other industry contacts; advertising and analyzing monthly financial statements.

I emerse myself in whatever I do and am keen to learn whether is in my personal or professional life. I am also a firm believer in giving back to the community in which I live. I have volunteered since a very early age in middle school and currently give back in Abu Dhabi teaching the game of ice hockey. I cannot think of a time when I was not actively involved with a charity or event.
