  • at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals
  • June 2017

Investigation of Sensors Embedding in Materials & Study of their Placement in Smart Structures Investigation on methods to embed off the shelf miniature sensors (fiber optic-FBG) inside materials (metal/plastics) to make existing structures smart. Work included sensor characterization with respect to mechanical, thermal and hydrostatic strain using custom built test setups. Light transmission tests with embedded optical sensor in materials like Aluminum, ABS and PLA. Theoretical investigation for optimal sensor placement. Sensor calibration study accompanied by strain gages. Incorporation of 3D printing to embed sensors in complex shapes.
