Approval Engineer, Procedures and Electrodes at Canadian Welding Bureau
  • Canada
  • My current job since February 2013

The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB Group) is an industry supported private sector organization providing welding certification, management systems registration and training services to over 7, 600 companies in 34 countries. As an engineer with the Bureau, I
* Evaluate welding procedures (WPS) and provide welding engineering consultancy in areas such as: joint configuration and welding design, defining welding parameters, post weld heat treatment and filler material selection in dissimilar metal joining.
* Certify electrodes by performing periodic Quality Management System (QMS) Audits at manufacturing facilities, and by analyzing mechanical and metallurgical testing results based on the requirements of various welding codes.
* Certified electrodes manufactured by the Lincoln Electric Company in the U.S.A. and Mexico, National Standard in the U.S.A., ESAB (Aluminum) in Traverse City, MI, Hobart Brothers (Aluminum) in Traverse City, MI, Nelson Studs in Elyria, OH, and many more in the U.S.A., Mexico, Germany, Ukraine and India.
* Operations Management contact for the Procedures & Electrodes Approval Department: completed process map studies for welding procedures and electrodes approval processes. Streamlined the welding procedures review strategy so that a review can be completed faster while minimizing errors. Consequently the turnaround time of a welding procedure review dropped from as high as 22 business days to 1-2 business days, i.e. a reduction of 90% in welding procedure review time.
* Trained and mentored two new engineers in the Procedures & Electrodes Approval department.

Application Engineer at Arctic Combustion Limited
  • Canada
  • May 2011 to February 2013

Arctic Combustion Limited is an EPC company serving Oil and Gas industries in Canada. My Application Engineer role at Arctic was a combination of Project and Proposals engineering. I
* Managed public and private proposals through MERX: Canadian Public Tenders - Federal, Provincial & Municipal.
* Developed and implemented Bid Assessment and Bid-No Bid Strategies so that complex, high- risk, high-value RFP’s are completed on time and under scheduled resources.
* Engineering skills I developed and actively practiced:
- Sizing and selection of major mechanical engineering equipment, i.e. boilers, chillers, heat exchangers and pumps.
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of process control concepts and instrumentation.
- Interpreting design input documentation, i.e. P&I diagrams, process narratives and logic schematics.
- Sound knowledge of piping, mechanical, gas and electrical codes.
* Won two (2) multi-million dollar utility plant servicing contracts (York University, Metrolinx GO Stations; net worth of $2.5M each) and managed the projects with competence.

Design Engineer at Babcock & Wilcox
  • Canada
  • May 2009 to April 2011

As a member of Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Engineering Design Team for the design of pressure vessels and components,
* Prepared and evaluated structural analysis calculations and reports using sophisticated analytical and numerical methods (e.g. thermal, structural nonlinear Finite Element Analysis) ensuring conformance to the requirements of applicable ASME codes (Section II, III, VIII) and other contractual specifications.

Maintenance Engineer at Imperial Oil Limited
  • Canada
  • January 2007 to December 2007

As a member of the Maintenance Engineering Group at Nanticoke Refinery, Ontario,
* Created work plans by gathering data (drawings, work scopes, labor estimates, inspection requirements) for cost effective and reliable repair options,
* Prepared material specifications for procurement, drawings and work scope specifications for contracting and daily shift schedules,
* Excelled project management principles such as resource allocation, scheduling and budgeting while working as a project engineer in the capital project 10” H2 Process Line Re-Steam Tracing at CRU (net worth $350, 000).

Education

Master's degree, Manufacturing Engineering
  • at McMaster University
  • August 2012

* Completed the degree part-time. * Thesis: A Khan, H Terpstra, M Thompson, Reliability Centered, Multiple Year Preventative Maintenance Plan for Utility Boilers, September, 2012. * Courses completed: Manufacturing Systems, Operations Management, Project Management, Reliability & Risk Management, Materials Management & Production Planning (SAP MM, PP), Simulation of Manufacturing & Service Systems, and Advanced Finite Element Analysis.

Bachelor's degree, Mechanical Engineering
  • at McMaster University
  • April 2009

* Graduated summa cum laude. * Engineering Study Abroad Program in Europe (2008). With collaboration of Volgograd State Technical University, studied 01 (one) semester at Volgograd State University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Russia (VolgGASU).
