As a speech and language therapy assistant I am a member of a multidisciplinary team. I have completed online webinars for Boardmaker, Snap core first, Alternative Augmentative Communication and sensory integration in order to cope with the job requirements. I participate to run the induction eating and drinking training and communication training with the Speech and language therapist. I train support workers how to support young people with risk feeding, under the guidance of the Speech therapist.
I am working and help to create a communication section in care plans or to update an existent one. Part of my role is also to contribute on updating Behavioral Support Plans in order to reduce and cope better with behaviors of challenge. On a daily basis working on using low and hi-tech AAC which includes update and create communication books, using eye-gaze, creating boards with symbols and signs for the purpose of better communication between young people and staff members. Also I have been called on to work alongside one of the skills tutors in the skills development centre, helping run a session around communication and lead the session in the absence of the tutor.
I am involved in young people's assessments about their eating and drinking skills. Creating and/or updating individual eating and drinking plan including equipment they need, position and environment, dietary requirements, texture, drinking guidelines (use of thickener and if yes the right level), likes and dislikes.
As a support worker I used to support young people (ages 18-30 years old) following guidelines outlined in their care plans. In a daily practice I was upholding young people's right to choice, dignity, independence, privacy, respect, safety, equality, diversity and confidentiality. Complete their daily records with details. As a key worker, kept monthly key working reports up to date and participated in updating their care plan and risk assessments.
Working with children with ASD, learning disabilities, attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder, phonological disorders, articulation disorders and speech delay. Ages 3-12 years old. I was running individual sessions depending on children's needs and creating a person center approach for every child in collaboration with the occupational therapists. Worked also with adult with swallowing and speech difficulties after a stroke. Providing 1:1 sessions in order to improve eating and drinking skills.
