General Surgery Resident (PGY V)
King Abdullah University Hospital - Irbid, Jordan
Duties: Covering all surgical departments including the wards, ED, OR, ICU and the
Surgical clinics.
ED : Evaluation of trauma patients and providing best management according to ATLS
protocols .Supervising Junior Residents in the department assisting them in difficult
cases and procedures and providing consultations to the other specialties in the
department in the form of a procedure or surgical intervention in addition admissions
and discharges need to be signed off by me.
OR: In the theater I would perform regular general surgery operations without assistance
and with minimal or no supervision especially while on-call where the consultant is out
of the hospital and I would be the most senior in-house surgeon.These operations
include Hernias, Lap cholecystectomy, Appendectomy both open and Lap, laparoscopic
and emergency lapratomies while on call, vascular injuries, limb amputations and
emergency pediatric operations.In addition to performing higher-level operations with
the consultant scrubbed-in to supervise and assist me . I am also responsible for
supervising and assisting junior residents in performing operations suitable for their
level of practice.
Surgical Clinics (General, Vascular, Thoracic, Cardiac, plastic and Pediatric) : I usually
cover it alone or with the consultant present seeing patients refereed to us where we make final decision and order their admissions and operation to be carried out and when.
Wards and ICU : I usually do the morning and evening round, with or without the
consultant, after the juniors finished their round where we make decisions on whether
patients are to be discharged, taken to theater, or we change their course of
management and we also explain complex procedures to patients and their families and
gain their consent.I also coordinate with other department consultants the transfer of
patients to their care, the need for their intervention or consultations.
