AECOM Feb 2013 - Present
Astana, Kazakhstan
Position: Structural Engineer

Abu Dhabi Plaza Project, Astana, Kazakhstan
Client: ALDAR
Project Manager: MottMacDonald
Contractor: CCC, Arabtec

Abu Dhabi Plaza is a major mixed-use development located in Astana, Kazakhstan. This integrated community will have a gross leasable area of 244, 604 square metres, including five new elegant high-rise commercial buildings to the mix, providing new office, residential, hotel and shopping space. One of the project’s five towers will reach a height of 320 metres with 75 storeys; making it Central Asia’s tallest building. Two of the other buildings are 33 storey and other two are 14 storey and 17 storey respectively.
The Gravity loads for the buildings are transferred by the floor slabs, which spans between the internal reinforced concrete cores, and the edge reinforced concrete columns. In general all vertical elements continue straight down to the foundation. The lateral stability of the towers is to be provided mainly by the reinforced concrete Core Walls. For the tallest building, in addition to the core walls outriggers are also provided at three different levels to resist lateral loads. The foundation system for the Plaza comprises of a reinforced concrete raft supported on piles. The raft varies from 850 mm thick under the podium up to 9800 mm thick under the Block R.
I have been involved in the project for past 5 years. As a structural engineer my responsibilities are including but not limited to the following;
• Receive, review, comment, approve or reject any Civil or Structural Steel and Reinforced Concrete shop drawings and IFC drawings.
• Working in close partnership with architects and other professional engineers in terms of coordination and choose the appropriate materials, such as concrete, steel, timber and masonry, to meet design specifications.

• Review of documentations related to construction monitoring control system and building monitoring systems.
• Review the contract information in-order to advise the contractor accordingly in-case of non-conformance.
• Review of all the construction related issues i.e. steel structure for temporary works, Material approval requests, Field change request etc.

• Support and comment on the Contractors process for obtaining local permits, licences, project close out and compliance with Expertisa where relevant to structure.
• Review quality control processes and sign off of key elements / stages in respect to structural design / site structural elements.
• Provide any required details / proposed solutions in sketch and Autocad format.
