Mobile Money total solution (Project Value was $20 million USD)
Look after the delivery and in fact all aspects of the Mobile Banking for the APAC region.
Managed the prime customer being Telenor based in Pakistan who is fairly mature but now finding that changes are required so re-deploying the entire application for the full function of this mobile banking version.
Wrote the initial White Paper for Mobile Banking in Africa (MPESA) which in terms of delivery the IP was sold to IBM UK for the code to be written and then delivered by FNS (myself included) into Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda. Most successful Mobile rollout in the world at this point.
USSD payment gateways (design and application build)
Managed and worked with onsite and offsite teams based in India and in Pakistan.
Managed and worked alongside the Architects designing and working with the USSD channels etc.
Assisted with the design of the Architecture but the delivery was done by the selected vendor
Projects were all high risk in that a large number of errors were still being found in the core system and new releases had to be closely managed and tested. The industry standard is 2 releases per every 12 month period but in this instance every 3 months a new release is being issued.
Project methodology moved between Agile, Waterfall, Scrum and Prince which added its own dynamics to the programmes and projects. This was a little like a moving target as the RAG reporting, as an example, differed from vendor to vendor and then the Bank.
Legacy system at VISA (Tameer Bank) was one that was hashed together in house and in fact never worked correctly as it was cloned on the Mpesa application but the USSD payment gateways never functioned correctly at all
Project now delivered and named Easypaisa.
Assisted with the setup of the

Project Value $ 35 Million USD and Key Contributions
Programme Manager for a complex and multiple vendor T24 site based in Amsterdam and Rotterdam Holland.
My role was to deliver with my team a MODEL Bank based on T24 (Vanilla model)
Interfaced into the Trading platform running on BaNCS
The Model Bank required was as a result of the old Legacy system that has been in place for some 20 years and was based on Hogan and PEGA but terribly old and out dated
My role is one of managing the Program which is made up of multiple sites and Projects and Vendors (the Bank, TCS, Private testing, Accenture, Temenos and Cognizant in various forms).
Trade finance from Misys was also implemented as part of the Model Bank and integrated into the T24 solution that was proposed (used a third party solution being Misys)
Payment Applications
The methodology changes as the bank’s mood does in that for a few weeks its Agile and then Waterfall and Scrum and Prince so that is at times a moving Scheduled target.
Savings to the Annual Operating cost of the existing Banking solution equated to 10 million Euros PA

Standard Bank of South Africa/Barclays Capital

January 2010 - December 2010

Project Value $ 12 Million USD and Key Contributions:
Creating Business Models for Mass Market Banking. Budget $22 USD (Mpesa improvements)
Mobile Banking model that I designed 8 years ago was developed by IBM UK and labelled Impisa and I took that to the local SUB Saharan market focussing on the ‘un banked’ segment of the population in the rural areas.
A total Mobile banking solution provided on the Mobile handset including small Business loans to a maximum value of $ 1200/ per applicant. Reached and secured a client base of just short of 40 million Clients. This was full mobile Banking and Loan disbursement via the handset and POS devices.
JV created with the principle mobile vendor in SADAC and shared the ‘mitigated risk’
Countries involved and implemented in were Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and followed with South Africa but principle focus market place was the ‘un banked market’ based in rural areas and the migrant working populace all over the Sub Saharan region.
Legacy systems played a huge role here as it was difficult to remove without resistance as the code was very old.
Back end Banking solution for Stanbic is BaNCS
Programming and projecting Governance for Barclays Capital. (Governance applied was based on PMP and Prince2
Infrastructure design involvement at a high level as the vendor was responsible for the delivery due to it being in Africa
Principle emphasis on the Business and Project and Programme Governance as this Programme had none so this was a number one priority to introduce and quickly as to ensure the Audit would be passed. It did pass.
Responsible for Mass Market Banking, Community Banking and Mobile Banking.
Assisted in designing payment Applications
Secured loans was an integral part of this entire rollout
Compiling the business model to take to market the Community Banking model.
Interacting continually with internal customer and stakeholder teams globally and applying appropriate governance, to ensure that project schedules and dependencies are factored into plans (Audit requirements.)
Recompiled all the standard reporting like Mandates and Charters and all the Planning schedules as it all had to be rewritten and re base lined with new milestones and bringing together 9 plans into a single plan.
Formulated a PMO to ensure an Audit would be passed with all the terms of reference to enable a full audit to be conducted.
Responsible for delivering Trade, Treasury and Derivates projects to plan.
