A Solicitor in the ODPP NSW is responsible for preparing and
conducting criminal prosecutions on behalf of the Director of
Public Prosecutions in NSW courts. This includes screening briefs,
providing advice on evidence and charges, assisting in the
negotiation of pleas of guilty, undertaking simple advocacy work,
and instructing in trials and appeals.
Key Accountabilities:
•
Manage a diverse criminal law practice prosecuting matters
before NSW courts in accordance with Prosecution Guidelines,
Delegations, ODPP policies and procedures and the NSW
Charter of Victim’s Rights.
•
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all relevant law and
procedures to provide advice to internal and external
stakeholders of the ODPP
•
Work collaboratively in a team to prepare matters for hearing or
trial including liaising with key stakeholders, drafting notices
and maintaining accurate records to ensure continuity in the
carriage of criminal prosecutions from registration to
completion.
•
Instruct Counsel in the District and Supreme Court and the
Court of Criminal Appeal in criminal prosecutions and
appeals.
•
Conduct and appear in less complex prosecutions on behalf of
the ODPP.
•
Communicate effectively with internal and external
stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective prosecutions

Provide members with accurate and commercially realistic advice on
contracting and compliance in the residential building industry
including:
o Industrial relations issues including termination of
employment and award compliance.
o Advising on the operation of standard form contracts in the
building industry.
o Assisting members with disputes over payments, contract
performance and quality of work.
o Compliance issues regarding Workers Compensation, Long
Service Leave, Tax.
• Prepare and draft HR documentation through HIA’s HR
template documentation offering. When necessary, provide
member referrals to relevant technical specialists.
• Present at seminars and information sessions including trade
nights and trade breakfasts (may include some regional travel).
• Identify and report on regional issues which will impact on
members or HIA, including reviewing draft legislation and
preparing submissions and briefing papers, articles, newsletters
and information sheets.
• Provide policy, research and lobbying support for Manager
Workplace Services (NSW/ACT) on relevant industrial relations,
WHS and legal issues including industrial relations, licensing,
consumer protection, security of payment, long service leave and
workers compensation.
• Handle more complicated member matters as requested.
• Attend the NSW Regional Industrial Relations and Services Committee.
• Liaise with and work closely with the Hunter and ACT
workplace advisors, national workplace services team and provide
assistance for other regions as directed.
