Chief Pharmacist
• Participate in hospital management committees as required.
• Co-ordinate safe, effective and economic use of medicines within the
Hospital.

Leadership/Management

• Ensure that work schedules and work programs are created to provide for the
most effective, efficient and safe deployment of staff and other resources.
• Lead changes in work, procedures, techniques or technologies having regard
to developments in the field of pharmacy practice with particular emphasis on
promoting the safe use of medicines within the hospital. Expand the use of the
expertise of pharmacy within the Hospital through better integration with the
health care teams.
• Take a lead role in the hospital’s accreditation program especially as it relates
to medication safety and compliance standards.
• Identify failures or defects in the medicine management systems in the
hospital. Report all such failures to the Medication Safety, Drug and
Therapeutics and Patient Safety and Governance Committees as appropriate.
Work towards improving the systems and eliminating any potential areas of
error.
• Identify defects in supplies and /or equipment. Receive and record details
concerning deviations from norms and investigate and report findings as
required to the relevant authorities.

Financial
• Take responsibility for the purchasing and distribution of all medicines,
pharmaceuticals and other related items in a cost-effective manner.
• Ensure the expenditure on staff and resources is controlled within the
Department budget.
• Ensure that departmental or Hospital policies (e.g. generic prescribing,
generic substitution) are enforced.

Staff Management
• Lead by example a professional, punctual and dedicated department.
• Create, promote and maintain clear, open communications and healthy
working relationships. Ensure a high level of teamwork between pharmacy
staff and the rest of the organization staff. Stimulate initiative among team
members.
• Collaborate with the Human Resources Department in the recruitment,
selection and training of staff if appropriate.
• Keep records of staff attendance - annual, sick, study, maternity and other
leave and deal with staff grievances, complaints or disciplinary matters in
accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
