On a recommendation from college, I was the only CIPS student from my intake taken on by the hotel on attachment. Before even completing the five-month industrial attachment, the hotel offered me a full-time position as purchasing officer.
Within one year in that initial role, I had demonstrated how the hotel could make more effective use of market research to control food costs (- one of the hotel’s major cost areas) and maintain quality at the same time. My proposals were adopted and the hotel cut food supply bills by almost half.
After a year as Purchasing Officer, the hotel recognised my contribution by transferring me to the Engineering Stores in trying to stabilize the department, a role I enjoyed for seven years. The position was varied and challenging and I was able to work on a number of new projects. I supervised two junior clerks and a receiving clerk and reported to the hotel’s cost controller.
•CHANGE: Made numerous and effective interventions in stores and purchasing:
Overhaul of the stores department - restructuring to improve performance.
Identified and reduced theft.
Ensuring that stocks are ordered, control ordering in accordance with the production schedule and forecast.
Ensuring that orders are expedited so that delivery is achieved within the schedule time frame and to avoid stock outages.
Identifying fast moving, moderate moving and nonmoving stocks and report on obsolete and damages to the Supervisor for an action.
Monitor and maintain stock levels at a sustainable levels
Ensure that stocks are correctly received, binned and updated accordingly.
Ensure stocktaking is carried out and reconciled periodically.
Ensure safety standards are adhered to by every staff in order to avoid accidents
Was in charge of parts and components for various equipment and motor vehicles.
