• Prepare to be a bank’s important “public face” when customers make deposits and withdrawals. While maintaining a friendly rapport with customers, personal bankers also must concentrate and be accurate while counting money, verifying signatures and numbers and ensuring that all bank records are correct.
• Understand the procedures for preparing cashier’s checks and traveler’s checks; opening savings and checking accounts and safe deposit boxes; purchasing bonds; and accepting utility bill payments.
• Stay current on rates for bonds, certificates of deposit, mortgages, lines of credit and foreign currency. Personal bankers also must know when to defer financial questions to a superior rather than risk giving out inaccurate information to customers.
• Count, arrange and verify money for myriad purposes, including teller drawers and the bank’s vault.
• Perform administrative tasks, which may include typing, filing and maintaining customer records; verifying armored car deposits; and drafting employee work schedules.
• Reconcile teller drawers at the end of a shift or the end of the day, using a calculator, computer or other method mandated by the bank.
• Adopt the role of public ambassador by promoting the bank’s products and services, such as special mortgage rates or lines of credit. Some personal bankers join their community's chamber of commerce or business associations to forge new business relationships
