Bachelor's degree, Economics
  • at Leeds Metropolitan
  • July 2012

My university education focused on the principles of economics and how they are applied to business. I gained both theoretical and practical understanding of the economic decisions faced by business and its managers, as well as the ability to analyse the economic and social environment in which these decisions are taken. The course maintained a strong focus on the development of key skills that are required in the professional environment, which revolved around core areas such as economics, accounting and business management. Ultimately my course has given me the fundamental understanding and skill set to solve the economic issues faced by business managers on a regular basis. Modules such as Statistics and micro economics, have allowed me to develop my analytical ability, along with learning how to manipulate data using various platforms, i.e. VLookup and pivot tables within Microsoft Excel. I also have experience using Microsoft Access - This has allowed me to look at data from different angles, where hard to find trends may arise. Other modules surrounding economics theory have gave me great understanding of how conflicting economic policies have performed over the past 5 decades, observing possible changes for greater performance, or the possibility of other policies that should have been implemented in exchange. I also undertook Behavioural Economics, which looked at empirical evidence expressing why the majority of economics models can never reflect perfect reality; due to the unrealistic assumption that economic agents are completely rational, efficient, compute all the information available etc. Overall, this module gave me a vital sense of how economic modelling is sometimes flawed, offering possible reasons why.
