MAIN FUNCTIONS General supervision of a tertiary hospital (110 beds) during the night admitting peadiatric, male and female patients with various medical and surgical conditions.
Teaching (in-service training) of the night staff
Issueing of emergency medication from the emergency pharmacy.
Handling any type of emergency situation in the hospital
Ensuring quality nursing care by auditting nursing records, nursing care plans and scheduled drug registers.
Ensuring enough staff available for the next shift according to the patient aquity and staff capability.

POSITION HELD: UNIT MANAGER - MEDICAL WARD
(Feb. 2008 - Apr. 2011)
MAIN FUNCTIONS In charge of a 37 bedded medical ward with a limited amount of 11 staff members with a patient occupancy of 45 to 55%.
Ten to fifteen doctors are working in the ward that leads to many doctors' rounds.
Typical medical ward, the medication can take up to 3 hours at a time.
Working out off-duties and doing scheduling on an intricate "clock in" system.
Infection control - strict infection control measures as medical aids do not pay for hospital acquired infections.
Managing of expenses like printing; stationary; consumables
Auditing of all patient files for completeness and accuracy of staff
Performance management and/ appraisal of all staff
Managing amount of staff according to acuities of patients and allowed staff budget. I transferred to my current position to be able to complete my Master's Degree in Nursing Administrtion.

POSITION HELD UNIT MANAGER - INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
(May 2007 - Feb. 2008)
MAIN FUNCTIONS
Dealing with 28 - 30 staff and resolving problems.
Working out the off duties to have a 20 bed unit covered 24/7 with limited amount of staff. Handling doctors' and visitors' issues.
Making sure of quality care for a wide variety of patients from high care angiograms to sophisticated craniotomies and cardiothoracic operations.
The Unit Manager position within the Medical ward became vacant and I applied to be able to gain experience of working in a ward situation.

Hobbies

  • Sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochetting, reading, hiking, walking, camping, travelling
    Did all the main hiking trails in South Africa, visited most of the Top Ten caravan parks in South Africa. Running a successful small bussiness of selling hand made embroidery, knitting and crochetted goods (produced by me). Ran a 25 km half marathon in 2.30 hrs at the age of 52!! Married for 24 years to the same man!!!
