POSITION HELD: UNIT MANAGER - MEDICAL WARD

MAIN FUNCTIONS In charge of a 37 bedded medical ward with a limited amount of 11 staff members with a patient occupancy of 45 to 55%.
Ten to fifteen doctors are working in the ward that leads to many doctors' rounds.
Typical medical ward, the medication can take up to 3 hours at a time.
Working out off-duties and doing scheduling on an intricate "clock in" system.
Infection control - strict infection control measures as medical aids do not pay for hospital acquired infections.
Managing of expenses like printing; stationary; consumables
Auditing of all patient files for completeness and accuracy of staff
Performance management and/ appraisal of all staff
Managing amount of staff according to acuities of patients and allowed staff budget. I transferred to my current position to be able to complete my Master's Degree in Nursing Administrtion.
POSITION HELD UNIT MANAGER - INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

MAIN FUNCTIONS
Dealing with 28 - 30 staff and resolving problems.
Working out the off duties to have a 20 bed unit covered 24/7 with limited amount of staff. Handling doctors' and visitors' issues.
Making sure of quality care for a wide variety of patients from high care angiograms to sophisticated craniotomies and cardiothoracic operations.
The Unit Manager position within the Medical ward became vacant and I applied to be able to gain experience of working in a ward situation.

MAIN FUNCTIONS
Started my career in the managerial field as Night Manager of the private hospital where I am still working. Functions the same as my present functions. After 13 months of Night Manager the position as ICU manager became vacant and seeing that I did my ICU training, I applied and transferred to ICU
I have been a nurse for all my professional life and wanted to experience a different environment than a hospital. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but due to a bad economic situation could I only sell one apartment. The fact that I only worked on commission made me return to nursing.

MAIN FUNCTIONS IN CHARGE OF THE JUNIOR NURSES: Responsible for the supervision of registered nurses looking after acutely ill or seriously injured patients who vary from ventilated and sedated to awake and talking.
UNIT PRESEPTOR: Responsible for the teaching for the newly appointed nurses.
QUALITY IMP0ROVEMENT: Implementing the quality improvement plan in ICU and try and improve the general standard of nursing care.
TRANS-CULTURAL NURSING: We were dealing with nurses and doctors from countries like the Philippines; Malaysia; Egypt; Lebanon and Palestine

Resigned to further my career in the Middle East at Saad Specialist Hospital, Khobar.
Dissertation completed of Research (academic) Masters degree in Nursing Management. I intently looked at the problems and challenges facing the professional nurse of today and strategies to improve the situation.
This was a part time programme done through the company training department over 8 months. It involved two day lectures monthly for 8 months and the handing in of an assignment at the end of the course. I completed the course with honors.
I did a four year University Degree part time through distance education in Nursing Education and Administration. We had to master 12 subjects such as Sosiology over two years, Pchychology one year, Nursing Administration over three years and Nursing Education also over three years.
This was a full time higher diploma course over a year at a residential university. The syllabus included the knowledge of physiology and pataphysiology at an advanced level. Pharmacology knowledge on all the drugs used in an ICU and microbiology to be able to deal with any type of infection.
This was a four year diploma that I did through the University of the Free State. It was a full time course including 50% practical work in a tertiary hospital. General nursing: theory and practical work in medical and surgical wards and one month experience in a Cardiac ICU. Midwifery: theory and practical work in obstetrics, labour ward, pre- and ante natal wards. Had to manage the delivery of 15 normal births. Psychiatry: theory and practical work in a psychiatric institution for a year. Community Health: theory and practical work in the community ranging from creches, schools to old-age-homes.
