Study: PhD Study at HOK
Details: Modelling the Healthcare System, an Analysis of Spatial, Time Management
The aim of this study is to investigate the composition of today's healthcare
system and explore how it functions in terms of space time and management.
The study will question whether the healthcare service is efficient in providing
the required services to meet the community's requirement. My research will
explore the history to the present day of healthcare and investigate any shift
towards the future of our healthcare requirements specifically in the UK. Can
an ideal healthcare model be developed to achieve a perfect and dynamic
system?
To achieve an ideal healthcare model, I believe that the client brief should be
based upon a list of underlying criteria as to what makes a successful
healthcare system. I aim to formulate this equation and furthermore, believe
that this very same equation can be converted into and algorithm for a simple
software programme to find the best design configuration of a hospital based
upon the brief.
Research on primary design components will allow me to formulate answers
to my equation. These components will help me to unravel the spatial, time
and management impact of a healthcare system; these are as follows;
• Spatial Implications of Care
• Attitude in Healthcare
• E-health/ Telemedicine and the Paperless Hospital
• Personal Medicine and Expertise Patients
• Nursing Manpower
• Cost (including Life Cycle Cost)
• Relationship between departments (also networking without physical
links)
• Sustainability
• Outside Factors
To analyse my formula, I hope to compare it to future projects based on
models such as the “Hub and Spoke” model. The results may well be very
different but the question will be “does my formula work? “
I hope to test the result of my brief and the algorithm by perhaps comparing it
to real projects, such as the Dubai Medical City.
