Dr. Mehmet Ali Soytas is an Associate Professor in the Accounting and Finance Department at KBS. His research covers topics in labor economics, family economics, income inequality, intergenerational mobility, firm sustainability and strategic behavior. Dr. Soytas’s work has been published in the Quantitative Economics, Energy Economics, International Journal of Production Economics and Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Review, among others. He has previously worked as a consultant for the World Bank and Energy Exchange Istanbul, as an Associate Professor of Economics at the Ozyegin University and as a researcher at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC).

Dr. Soytas has taught courses on microeconomics, econometrics, statistics, and labor economics at the University of Pittsburgh and at Ozyegin University; supervised Ph.D. dissertations, and presented at major economic conferences. He has organized workshops and seminar series, and acted as a referee for many international journals, and European and Turkish science foundation grants. He has had several research projects funded by the Turkish National Science Foundation. He has also been a visiting scholar at Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Washington University in St. Louis, Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, University of Pittsburgh and Australian National University. Dr. Soytas holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pittsburgh.

Worked as a Researcher at KAPSARC’s Policy and Decision Science program. My research agenda at KAPSARC is to develop and conduct research on labor markets and energy demand connection. As an economist, I model economic decision making of individuals and households and bring models to data by applying structural econometric estimation techniques. Designing counterfactual policy experiments and scenario analysis to support smart policy making is the ultimate goal of this research agenda.

Ozyegin University’s mission is to create, share, and apply knowledge in the service of society. The University aims to bring solution-oriented and high value-added applications to life. We aimed to understand first hand the realities of both the public and private sectors, on both a global and local level, through its world-class education and research. The forum established seminar series, initiated research collaborations and created a platform at the university for further multidisciplinary research initiatives to be undertaken within my directorship.

I visited Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey to collaborate on research projects and initiate new research projects on Turkish labor market, develop policies to enhance female labor market participation and quantify measures for monitoring and evaluating enhancement of human capital in Turkey.
