PRODUCT DEVELOPER/MANAGER at Telkom SA SOC Ltd.
  • South Africa
  • February 2012 to July 2014

PRODUCT DEVELOPER/MANAGER FEB 2012 - JULY 2014 TELKOM
• Requirements gathering
• Technical analysis of existing digital products in the market
• Technical development of digital applications
o Internal Social Network
* Telkom employees contribute ideas and suggestions to the MD/CEO on a platform designed to encourage collaboration between employees and upper management.
o MXit Portal
* Telkom connects with the MXit community through their app on MXit. Current specials, interactive polls and games keep the 500 000+ subscribers engaged.
o MXit Game
* A dating simulator (Dinner Date) that provides the MXit community with dating tips. This is based on a quiz-type formula and players are rewarded with airtime prizes. The main reasons why people login to MXit is for dating advice and to play games. Therefore, Telkom merged these two factors to develop a hugely successful application. This game was conceived, developed and deployed by myself.
o Facebook/Google Chrome Self Service
* Telkom is the only mobile operator in Africa that offers Self Service within Facebook without requiring the user to log in to their Telkom account while browsing Facebook. A user can redeem airtime vouchers, purchase data balance and view their balance within Facebook. This application is also available on the Google Chrome web store.
o BlackBerry Carrier Billing/Carrier Channel
* Telkom was the second mobile operator in South Africa to enable BlackBerry users to purchase apps within BlackBerry World using their airtime. This is a revenue gold mine as mobile apps are currently one of the biggest trends in the mobile ecosystem. The Carrier Channel allows Telkom to suggest apps to their customers and can be seen within BlackBerry World. Telkom are also currently in development with another vendor to become the first mobile operator in Africa to offer this service.
o Call Me Advertising
* Management of the ads placed at the end of Call Me messages and system improvements.

• WASP (Wireless Application Service Provider) Product Development and Management
o Event Based Billing
* A billing system that allows WASPs to bill Telkom customers for content (music, games, ringtones, poems, horoscopes etc.) . A customer can be charged for a once-off transaction or daily, weekly and monthly subscriptions. This system is very complex and took 18 months to build due to WASPA regulations requiring a double opt-in confirmation from the customer. Partner relationship management is handled by the WASP team (including myself)
o SIM Swop Fraud Prevention
* Banks and mobile operators needed to find a way to minimise the occurrences of SIM Swop fraud in South Africa. A system is being developed whereby banks are able to query the current IMSI information of a customer when they are performing a real-time transaction. This information is then compared to their previous IMSI information to identify any discrepancies.
o SMS Coverage/USSD Locator
* One of the major challenges in the mobile operator environment is the signal strength in various locations of the country. A system was developed whereby any mobile user in South Africa can query if there is 3G or LTE signal at a certain address or location. This is done via a simple SMS (43482) . Moreover, a USSD string allows any mobile user in SA to find the nearest Telkom store, Airtime outlet or Wi-Fi Hotspot. Development and management of these products is handled solely by me.
