الخلفية التعليمية

بكالوريوس, Communication Arts
  • في Southwestern at Memphis (renamed Rhodes College)
  • يونيو 1979

Completed studies at Southwestern at Memphis in June, 1979 while working full-time as Director of Advertising for WLOK Radio: a division of Gilliam Communications, Inc. Recipient of two Leadership Award scholarships while attending Southwestern (1974 and 1975); as well, scholarships from the Miss Teenage America Foundation (Academic/Scholar National Competition) as 2nd runner-up, and Miss Teenage Memphis Scholarship (1973/74) as 1st place winner. When "recruited" to attend Southwestern, I was promised the school would take into account my public relations speaking/singing commitments for Miss Teenage America and Miss Teenage Memphis. However, there were no concessions made by professors for classes missed, etc. while fulfilling my contractual obligations outside of the school. I completed my Freshman year with a GPA that did not reflect that I entered the college ranking in the top 10 percent of my high school class of 111; having won national competitions, including Miss Teenage America (2nd runner-up), which required testing into the top 20% in the nation in all subject areas (test designed / administered by Encyclopedia Britannica). Continued working part-time, and full-time while attending Southwestern: Co-host for PicturePages (pilot for a national children's weekly Educational program) in 1974-75; Weekend News Announcer for WQUD Radio (1974-75); Associate News Producer-Noon News, for WMC TV (NBC-affiliate (1976-78)); Director of Advertising/Advertising Sales Executive for WLOK Radio (1979-1981). Also completed a three-month Summer Internship program with Theatre Memphis Community Theatre, working in: executive planning committees, stage production, costume design, setting / lighting design, stage management and acting departments. Additionally, earned Screen Actors' Guild membership: cast as "Sue" in the ABC TV movie, "Lawman Without a Gun" starring Lou Gossett, Jr.: distributed internationally. All work money earned was applied toward my college tuition and living expenses. "Marched" in graduation exercises in 1979. Completed final course requirements for B.A. at Memphis State University (now, University of Memphis) while working as a News Reporter/Feature Writer for The Memphis Press Scimitar. Diploma / Degree conferred, at my request, in 1984.
