PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The power output capability of a given gas turbine plant is largely limited by the mass flow of air
that can be delivered at a particular ambient temperature to the combustion and turbine
sections. This is a function of the ambient temperature and humidity of the air. Many gas
turbines are equipped with systems designed to add water vapor or cool the air going into the
inlet of the compressor, or simply peak fire the turbine. Other systems inject large amounts of
steam or liquid water between the compressor discharge and combustion sections of the
machine, but these have not seen widespread adoption mainly due to the combination of high
costs for water and increased turbine maintenance requirements. These systems also
negatively affect the unit efficiency (heat rate) as energy that is required to vaporize the water is
not recovered. These systems are useful but provide only a small, incremental increase in
power.
The Turbo PHASE compressed air smarter peaking power system overcomes these
disadvantages by (1) avoiding the use of water or steam and (2) providing additional
compressed air via an arrangement that is typically much more efficient than and as clean as the
gas turbine itself. This results in continuous smarter peaking power capability of up to 10-20%
of the unit’s ISO rating and heat rate improvements of up to 7%-depending on the model of gas
turbine. The system is compatible with existing inlet fogging and duct burner systems and can
be applied to virtually any large gas turbine in simple cycle, combined cycle configurations.
