My LLM dissertation explored whether UK funded carbon offsetting projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Kenya and Uganda, create real climate benefits or simply repeat patterns of carbon colonialism. I looked at how international climate rules, UK policies and domestic laws shape these projects, and whether they protect community rights, land interests and national sovereignty. The aim was to understand if carbon trading in the region supports climate justice or ends up reinforcing unequal power dynamics. I achieved a distinction and I was awarded the Outstanding Student Award.
