Radiology Staff Nurse
Job Description:
• Assisting patients and their family with any questions or concerns about their procedure.
• Assessing a patient’s prior and current health, including any allergies and other health issues.
• Monitoring a patient’s vital signs; that is, blood pressure, temperature, critically analyzing any changes, and then reporting and acting on those findings.
• Administering and overseeing intravenous injections of contrast medium (solutions that enable the area of the body being imaged to show more clearly on the images or pictures).
• Administering any required medications and light sedation when used.
• Preparing patients for their procedure, including the use of antiseptic solutions and other methods of minimizing the risk of infection.
• Providing anesthetic assistance when patients need to be drowsy (sedated) or asleep (using general anesthesia) during the procedure.
• Start IV to instill special types of dyes for test.
• Support and inform family members and carers who often accompany patients for both elective and emergency procedures.
• Liaise with referring doctors and ward staff to ensure pre-procedural is completed.
• Prepare equipment for the safe care of the patient during the procedure.
• Communicate with other members of the interventional radiology team regarding the patient, thereby promoting good working relationships within the team.
• Identify and act upon potential hazards to both patients and staff and, where appropriate, act to prevent patient injury.
• Identify potential complications of various drugs used during the procedure, including contrast.
• Obtaining patients consent for the procedure in line with local policy
• Assess, plan and implement the total care of the conscious or conscious-sedated patients( this includes the monitoring of pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation)
• Ensure patients identifation by checking medical ID
• Practice and monitor correct wearing of gowns, gloves and masks where necessary
• Ensure patients laboratory work-up is checked ( BUN, CREATININE, PT, APTT, INR ) prior to procedure.
• Assist diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures.
• Practice the principles of asepsis during interventional procedure and act as a lead professional in infection control
• Positions patient appropriately on table for different procedures per radiologist preference.
• Monitoring the recovery and discharge of patients after their procedure.
• Inserting foley catheter as ordered by the radiologist for bladder exams.
• Assess patient Last Menstrual Period prior to hysterosalphingogram.
• Suction patient when necessary.
• Assess presence of implants ( pacemaker, valves) prior to MRI procedure.
• Position patient for MRI exam.
• Assess cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, renal and peripheral vascular status when accepting patient into area. Documents findings and notifies physician of any changes/abnormalities.
• Ensure that emergency drugs are available and that the defibrillator crash cart trolley are checked everyday.
