Quantity Surveyor at Driver Trett - Dubai UAE
  • United Arab Emirates - Dubai
  • May 2015 to May 2018

Driver Trett is a global multi-disciplinary consultancy providing specialist QS and contracts management services worldwide who maintain a high standard in recruiting their consulting professionals to ensure their reputation. Based out of their Dubai head office initially, on the merit of my credentials was then selected for secondment on three different commissions with reputable clients.

► Client 1 : WEATHERFORD | Project : Initial Production Facilities, Iraq | Oil and Gas | USD162 million

Weatherford, one of the largest multinational oilfield service companies had employed Habtoor Leighton Group Contracting (HLG) as subcontractor for civil and infrastructure works for the oil production facilities on three very large sites - oil and water tanks’ substructures, bund walls, pipelines, deluge system infrastructure, roads infrastructure, etc.

Worked as one of two member team from Driver Trett on providing commercial management and strategic contractual support to Weatherford for evaluation of HLG’s variations and claims on both entitlement and quantum assessment. Other deliverables under the scope were Cost-to-Complete (CTC) and Final Account reports.

Highlight of this commission - HLG’s claim oriented team was successfully managed to the satisfaction of Weatherford. The Driver Trett team received a commendation letter from Weatherford’s management for having diligently and meticulously worked to bring a favourable outcome on their final account to settle with HLG.

► Client 2 : DAMAC | Project : 3 Service Apartments Buildings, Dubai | Mixed Use / High Rise | AED 789 million

DAMAC, a large private developer in UAE is known for their approach of cutting edge cost optimisation. Whilst Driver Trett was fully engaged by DAMAC as cost consultants on the project, I was deputed on a short commission to work on the cost impact analysis for anticipated and approved value engineering changes proposed by the client’s design team. This information was later used by DAMAC to review the cost benefit before instructing a variation to the contractor for the value engineering change.

► Client 3 : EMIRATES GLOBAL ALUMINIUM | Project : Aluminium Smelting CAPEX Projects, Dubai | Heavy Industries | 100+ engineering contracts

EGA the #1 premium aluminium producer in the world, has one of their plant complex in Jebel Ali, Dubai which is spread across an area of 5 sq. km. A team of two consultants including myself from Driver Trett were appointed on this project. The commission involved contracts administration and commercial management of multitude of bespoke engineering contracts which dealt with CAPEX and OPEX commitments on heavy cranes, casthouses and furnaces, desalination plants, substations, gas turbines and civil/MEP infrastructure.

Owing to the unique and specialized nature of heavy industrial construction, benchmarking the claimed costs was not straightforward and hence involved thorough evaluation of claims and due diligence which was shouldered by the Driver Trett team.

EGA’s representative had formally vouched for our good performance for having resolved their long outstanding contractual and commercial issues across several contracts which streamlined discharging their obligations.

Site Quantity Surveyor at Dutco Balfour Beatty
  • United Arab Emirates - Dubai

► Client : RTA | Consultant : PARSONS | Project : Two flyovers on expressway, Dubai | Civil and Infrastructure | AED 168 million

DBB is by far one of the largest contractors in the region and reputable for Jebel Ali Port, Dubai International Airport and many other large infrastructure projects. Keeping up with fast-track project schedule and defending a tight budget was the main KPI of the cost management team. As a site QS my role was challenging and rigorous and involved the following:

o Procuring materials and subcontracts: preparing procurement plan, outsource packaging, bid documents, tendering, techno-commercial evaluation, bid analysis, negotiations, recommending shortlist for management decision.

o Commercial management of supply chain: subcontractors’ and suppliers’ accounts - negotiations, contra charges, certification.

o Preparing interim valuations inclusive of variations and claims.

o Quantification and valuation of bridge structures through interim till final valuation.

o Cost monitoring: alignment of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) activities with the cost coding system; budgeting and benchmarking budgets; data input audit; reconciliation after comparing costs with budgets; reporting variances with causes; cost to complete exercise.
