The Second Mate is responsible for maintaining the bridge navigational and communications equipment as
well as assisting with the vessel's piloting, navigation, safety and small boat operations. The 2nd
Mate reports
to the Captain and will assist the Master in communicating and enforcing all company policies and procedures.
Participates in on board safety training, meetings and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon
ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.
Participates in shore side training as required by the company.
Relieves and/or performs gangway watch as directed by the duty schedule.
Maintains familiarity with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency
Response Activities.
To detect, identify, analyze, control and eliminate recognized hazardous acts, condition, behavior
and violation.
• To coordinate and monitor the implementation of the requirements of safety management plan and arrange
continuous and formal daily safety monitoring to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
• To liaise with and support area Engineers/Supervisors to promote safety awareness in their area of
control.
• Participates in emergency response activities and investigate all industrial accidents / incidents
/ near misses involving personnel, plant & equipment and may affect surrounding environment. Review progress
and recommends corrective / preventive measures.
• Assist the construction site HSE leader in the application of company HSE POLICY & HSE management system
for site as well as workshop activities (Site preparation and construction) in compliance with International
& Local HSE rules and regulation.
• Perform Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to evaluate work-related hazard associated with complicated projects.
• Carry out site inspection on regular basis to ensure the proper Implementation / adherence of health,
Safety and Environment standards as per company OSH and Environment-MS & HSE policy.
• Promotes proper use of PPE's and provides basic occupational safety information on hazard recognition.
Responsible for all safety equipment,
Create ways to keep workers and the general public safe from harm.
Design safe work spaces.
Advise workers on proper lifting techniques.
Passed successfully the certificate of competency course for 2nd mate in accordance with the provision of regulation (A-ll/1) On the ship the second officer is the officer that works under the Master. The officer has special responsibilities to keep the ship, the people on board and the environment safe. This includes keeping the ship seaworthy during fire and loss of stability, and providing aid and maintaining safety during man overboard, abandoning ship, and medical emergencies.
