Flood Analysis and Mitigation for Petra Area in Jordan
at German Jordanian University in Amman, Jordan
Tasks:
- Analyzing the flood in Petra: analyze the flood conditions and the
geographic circumstances in Petra, especially at the Siq entrance.
- Delineating a Watershed: doing a watershed delineation of Petra
catchment using the software ArcGIS by getting a Digital Elevation
Model (DEM) from USGS NASA and dividing the area around the Siq into
five sub-watersheds based on five outlets on the streams and doing the
calculations for area, slope and length.
- Creating a model: building the model using the software WMS
(Watershed modeling system) by defining a tree map that represent the
watershed map in ArcGIS. Then entering the properties for each basin
(sub-area) for the simulation in order to get the peak flow and volume
values. Simulating the model using the software HEC-HMS v.4.2 which
gave us the property to enter precipitation data.
- Implementing Mitigation Scenarios: applying two flood mitigation
scenarios on the model and analyze their effect on the peak flow and
volume values.
