Environmental Planner/Bid Manager

March 2013 - Present

AECOM

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

March 2013 - Present

I have both a technical and commercial role.

Technically, as an Urban/Environmental Planner at AECOM, I wrote strategic planning policies and conducted field surveys and stakeholder meetings to inform the designs of a Green Infrastructure Network (GIN) and to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The GIN is a network of high quality open spaces consisting of restored lands such as coastal mangrove and artificial wetlands. I've also utilized GIS to inform a strategic land-use analysis that will redirect future urban density within a hierarchy of sustainable town centers. Our efforts will ultimately define Jeddah's character and enable residents, especially women, to benefit from improved access to amenities, jobs, and public transportation.

Besides my technical role at AECOM, I'm also the hatchet man for the Regional Director of Design Planning & Economics (DPE). I’ve been delegated to oversee nearly every element of the process. This includes: technical methodology, marketing strategy, contract review, and the critical submission of multi-disciplinary commercial models to the office of risk management.

LEED Coordinator

January 2012 - March 2013

Saudi Bin Laden Group

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

January 2012 - March 2013

Onsite LEED coordinator at the King Abdul-Aziz International Airport Jeddah (KAIA) project. The planned multi-billion dollar facilities will cover 687, 000 square meters and support an initial capacity of 30 million passengers per year. The project is seeking LEED Silver Certification

The LEED coordinator’s primary responsibilities are construction credits. To document and track Regional, Recycled, and Environmental Quality related credits. To write and to enforce procedures, such as the Erosion Control, Indoor Air Quality Management, and Construction Waste Management plans.

I provide monthly and weekly reports to the Owner Representative Dar Al Handasah and the Interface manger at SBG. These reports provide an overview of the LEED process and status assessments and forecasts on credit targets.

LEED is an intrinsic and time consuming endeavor that requires inputs from a broad range of stakeholders. I cultivated an ethos and increased participation among sub-contractors and SBG by down streaming LEED responsibilities and conducting educational workshops. I also reduced the time and increased the accuracy of material submissions by pioneering a process between quality assurance, document control and the interface department.

Environmental Services Intern

January 2010 - December 2010

California Coastal Commission

United States

January 2010 - December 2010

Biological resources intern at the California Coastal Commission, a government entity responsible for issuing development permits along the state’s 1, 100 mile coastline.

Assisted the staff ecologist evaluate potential environmental impacts, research regulations, and create habitat adaptation strategies.

Participated on the: Malibu Lagoon Restoration, Newport Beach Recreational Park, and the El Segundo Sand Dunes at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Conducted site visits, stakeholder assessments, and environmental surveys. Held discussions with environmental conservationists, community organizations, and potential developers to form a consensus.

Performed a Cost/Benefit analysis of a proposed $3 million habitat restoration project at LAX. I shuttled among a various interests to arrive at an alternative design proposal. I steered the final project design to maximize habitat restoration rather than costly hardscapes, and to employ a non-profit organization that offered more effective and affordable proposals.

Urban Planning Intern

June 2010 - August 2010

Khatib and Alami

Beirut, Lebanon

June 2010 - August 2010

Summer planning internship at the corporate headquarters of an esteemed Middle East engineering consulting firm.

Conducted a housing study for the Damascus Master Plan of 2025 on behalf of the Syrian Urban Planning agency. Used GIS to determine total housing stock and percent vacancy. Recommended a change in city policies that will better exploit existing housing stock rather than the release of additional public land to meet a spurt in housing demand.

Edited the Erbil Green Belt Master Plan and urban growth boundary. Evaluated land use on the outskirts of the city to create a system of parks, open space, and agricultural land uses to constrain city growth and public services to a sustainable level. Edited and wrote a preliminary executive summary for submission to the client and the director of planning.

Assisted a client understand and develop strategies to meet the environmental and social sustainability requirements necessary for an insurance guarantee from the Multilateral Insurance Guarantee Agency (MIGA). Client sought to conduct a $50 million dredging of a river in Ghana that could have potential impacts on local residents and wildlife.

I met independently with the client to persuade him that a thorough, albeit lengthy, analysis would expedite the process in the long run and increase the chances for approval among local residents and MIGA.
